history

Medemblik was mentioned in a document in the 10th century as Medemalacha (at the middle of the water Ach or A). Count Floris V of Holland had Radboud Castle built there in 1288 , named after a legendary king of the Frisians who settled this area in the early Middle Ages.

A year later, the Frisian still in some ways Medemblik got the Floris city charter . Between 1296 and 1299 Medemblik was the nucleus of an uprising against Holland. The city was also hit by the turmoil of a civil war in 1492 and 1517 (conquered by Grote Pier ).

During the Eighty Years' War Medemblik came to the Protestants through the intervention of the Geusen under Sonoy . A striving for independence ended in 1588 with the capture of the city by Moritz von Nassau .

Since the economic rivals Hoorn and Enkhuizen were easier to approach for the ships, Medemblik fell back to a small town in the 17th century.

Attractions

There is an exhibition about the life of the West Frisians in the Middle Ages and the history of the city and its castle. The extent of the old fortress , which was built to subdue the West Frisians, can still be seen in the area surrounded by a moat. In 1889 the facility was renovated and saved from deterioration. From 1900 to the early 1930s, the Medemblik District Court was housed in one room.
