Wognum ( listen ? / I ) is a place in the municipality Medemblik , West Friesland region , North Holland province ( Netherlands ). Audio file / audio sample

On January 1, 2007, the previously existing municipality of Wognum was merged with the city and municipality of Medemblik and the municipality of Noorder-Koggenland to form the new large municipality of Medemblik.

The village of Wognum had town charter from 1392 to 1426. Although Wognum has not been a town since then, the village has grown into a small town.

Special occurrence

The place became known nationwide when a motorcycle policeman was hit by a vehicle on the adjacent A7 in September 2009 when he was blocking a lane to make it easier for an ambulance to enter the motorway. This was in a serious traffic accident on the highway. The police officer sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries in the impact.
