The Museumstoomtram Hoorn – Medemblik ( German Museums - Steam Tram Hoorn - Medemblik , SHM for short ) runs on a 20-kilometer route in the Netherlands .
Original operating company
The railway line was originally operated by Locaalspoorwegmaatschappij Hollands Noorderkwartier from 1884 to 1935 . It was opened on November 3, 1887. The route runs on a winding route in order to keep the expropriations required for the route construction as low as possible. Steam locomotives were initially used, and diesel locomotives from 1929. During the Second World War , the line was not in operation from January 1, 1936 to May 29, 1940. Passenger traffic ceased at the same time as the closure of the railway station in Medemblik on January 5, 1941.
history
Tramweg Stichting , which was founded in 1965 and had previously kept material from the narrow-gauge Rotterdamse Tramweg Maatschappij, was also given a standard-gauge box locomotive (Lok 18) as a gift in 1966. In 1967, after the locomotive was overhauled, some special trips were made. In 1968 special trips with locomotive 18 and the meanwhile also existing locomotive 30 were organized on the Hoorn – Medemblik route. The success led to the fact that own cars could be purchased. In 1970, some members of the association took the exams as engine drivers and train staff, so that temporary staff was no longer required and from 1971 onwards, regular timetables could be used. The club received another locomotive (locomotive 23) as a gift. The museum railway was officially opened on April 19, 1972. From 1973 onwards there was daily driving, on June 1, 1971, goods traffic on the route was also taken over by the NS .
Museum train
Today the museum railway is a tourist attraction. The heart of the collection is locomotive No. 7742 Bello , which used to belong to the Nederlandse Spoorwegen . It is one of the few remaining standard-gauge branch line steam locomotives in the Netherlands. There are also three operational tram locomotives, two of which are box steam locomotives , as well as three works rail locomotives, a German locomotive that is now being converted into a Dutch shunting locomotive and a works rail locomotive that has yet to be renovated.
Seven of the nine steam locomotives are official Dutch railway monuments. Eight tram locomotives are regularly on the move with freight cars. The rail vehicles are painted in the paint scheme from 1926.
Corporate structure
Four legal entities are involved in the railway: three foundations and one company. The Stichting Beheer Museumstoomtram (SBM) owns the historical facilities and buildings. The Stichting Beheer Spoorlijn (SBS) owns the rail infrastructure. The BV Exploitatiemaatschappij Museum Steam Tram (BEM) is the operating company in which the rail operations and related activities are housed. All employees are employed by the operating company. A large part of the staff are volunteers. The certified shares are owned by the West Frisian cities in the Stichting Administratie Kantoor (SAK) .
Partnerships
The heritage railway has a partnership with the Bluebell Railway in England .
On the disused side of Platform 2 in Huddersfield there is an old car bolted to the floor, with a plaque in the window commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Stoomtram Hoorn-Medemblik .
Movie
The railway was used in 1979 for the filming of the feature film Bei Nacht und Nebel (Original title: The Riddle of the Sands , German video distribution title from 1984: Secret Command ROTS ). Meanwhile, the station building of Medemblik was labeled 'Emden' and that of Twisk with 'Bensersiel'.
The train, the level crossing in Twisk and the station in Twisk, this time labeled as 'Enkhuizen', also appear in the 2011 Dutch children's film Benni, der Lausebengel (original title: Bennie Stout ).
Triangle combination tour
The train journey is often combined, especially by tour groups, with a boat trip from Medemblik to Enkhuizen on the Friesland from 1956 and from there with a train journey in the regular service of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen on the Zaandam – Enkhuizen railway line back to Hoorn .
