The plants of VEB Waggonbau Bautzen, VEB Waggonbau Dessau, VEB Waggonbau Görlitz, VEB Waggonbau Ammendorf, VEB Waggonbau Niesky and Vetschau were merged into Deutsche Waggonbau AG after German reunification in 1990 . This was bought by Bombardier Transportation in 1998 . VEB Lokomotivbau Elektrotechnische Werke "Hans Beimler" Hennigsdorf was taken over by AEG again. In 2005, the Niesky plant was taken over by DB vehicle maintenance . The Dessau plant was also sold. The medium-sized FTD Fahrzeugtechnik Bahnen Dessau has set up shop on this site .

The Gotha wagon factory was smashed. One part of the company was sold to the Schmitz Group and manufactures road trailers, another part of the company is Gothaer Fahrzeugtechnik, a manufacturer of lattice masts and boom extensions. Rail vehicle construction no longer takes place in Gotha, nor in Babelsberg. VEB Lokomotivbau Karl Marx Babelsberg was wound up in 1992. Today there is an industrial park on its premises. In 1994 the Wildau Crankshaft GmbH was founded at the Wildau site, which was taken over by the Georgsmarienhütte company in 1997 . A new campus of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau was built on the remaining parts of this site .
