The locomotives of the E05 series (from 1958: EU20 series ) were universal electric locomotives of the Polish State Railways (PKP).

history

Due to the lack of established national production of electric locomotives, the PKP were dependent on imports in the 1950s. As early as 1954, VEB  Lokomotivbau Elektrotechnische Werke “Hans Beimler” Hennigsdorf procured the E04 series (later referred to as the EU04 series), a four-axle universal locomotive. In 1955, a six-axle variant was developed as the E05 based on the E04. The structure was correspondingly longer, the engines of the E04 were taken over, the bogies were designed with three axles. The E05-01 was the PKP's first six-axle electric locomotive.

Series production of the E05 began in 1956. A total of 34 locomotives had been built by 1958. To better distinguish the six-axle electric locomotives, the series was renamed EU20. While four-axle locomotives were imported from different countries, the EU20 remained the only imports of six-axle electric locomotives. As a successor, the ET21 series was built at Pafawag from 1957 .

The EU20 was based in Piotrków Trybunalski during its entire operating life . They were mainly used in freight train service. The retirement took place from 1976 to 1981, EU20-24 remained in the Warsaw Railway Museum.
