The class E 42 (from 1970 class 242 ) of the Deutsche Reichsbahn was an electric locomotive that was a modified version of the DR class E 11 for freight traffic and slow passenger traffic . At Deutsche Bahn AG , these locomotives were in use for a short time as DB class 142 . Some locomotives were sold to Switzerland and designated as Ae 417 , Ae 476, or Ae 477 . The series is also known by the nickname wooden scooters .

Constructive features

Mechanical part

The bogie frame is a welded construction made of box-shaped sheet steel hollow beams. At the pivot support the traction motors are suspended. The bogies are connected to one another by a special coupling. The main frame is a welded construction and is designed as a bridge frame. The floor panels for the driver's cabs and the engine room are included in the construction as load-bearing parts. The locomotive body is a self-supporting lightweight steel structure welded to the main frame. The braking device consists of a single -release compressed air brake with an additional brake (K-GP mZ) and a spindle hand brake . Starting with the E 42 023 locomotive, the locomotives had six individual ventilation grilles on each side.

Electrical part

The pantographs were new designs and have double contact pieces. This type of pantograph was also used in the E 04 , E 44 and E 94 series of old electric locomotives operated by the Deutsche Reichsbahn . The main switch is a compressed gas switch with a breaking capacity of 200 MVA . The main transformer is an externally ventilated jacket transformer with a disc winding in an economy circuit . It has 15 taps for the motor circuit, two for the train heating and one for the auxiliaries. The cam switch has 14 speed steps and has a step switch for finely stepped voltage changes between the speed steps. The traction motors are available as separately ventilated twelve pole AC - series motors with commutating and compensating winding run.

history

Used by the Deutsche Reichsbahn

After LEW delivered the first two pre-series locomotives in 1963 (E 42 001 and 002), series production of these Bo'Bo ' locomotives began in the same year . A total of 292 units were procured by 1976, with 186 locomotives delivered by the end of 1970. In addition to serving in front of passenger trains and freight trains , they were also used in S-Bahn traffic from Leipzig and Dresden . In the early years (until 1970) , the home railway depots were Bitterfeld , Erfurt , Halle (Saale) , Chemnitz (then Karl-Marx-Stadt), Leipzig, Weißenfels and Zwickau .

BR 142 in summer 2007

The locomotives of the E 42 series were supposed to be freight trains with a weight of 1,800 t on the plane at 80 km / h; Freight trains with a weight of 1,000 t on a 5 ‰ incline at 60 km / h and passenger trains with a weight of 500 t on a 5 ‰ incline at 90 km / h. After initial difficulties, the class E 42 locomotives showed good running characteristics and performance. Changes on the part of the manufacturer, which were not discussed with the DR, proved to be disadvantageous and were reversed. In freight train service, the locomotives transport 1,900 t on the flat and 1,000 t on a 5 ‰ gradient at 80 km / h; in passenger train service 800 t on the flat at 100 km / h and 825 t at 5 ‰ at 90 km / h.

Since some machines of the 211 series were converted into 242s after the acquisition of the 243 series locomotives , the DR even had 305 units on January 1, 1992. In the following years they were scrapped, the last locomotive at the DB was parked in 1999.

Use in Switzerland

former BR 142 used in Switzerland as EGP 142 132 in the historic locomotive shed in Wittenberge

From 1993/1994, 18 locomotives were sold in Switzerland to Lokoop , an alliance between the Mittelthurgau Railway ( MThB), Südostbahn (SOB) and the Mittelthurgau travel agency (RMT). These were revised and used as Ae 477 (initially as Ae 476) mainly in eastern Switzerland for freight traffic. After the SOB merged with BT , the new SOB left the cooperation. The Mittelthurgau Railway wanted to cooperate with the SBB in passenger transport, for which a new company, Thurbo , was founded. Before it could start operating, MThB ran into liquidity problems and was ultimately liquidated. The freight business including locomotives was taken over by SBB Cargo . However, it had enough locomotives of its own and sold all 18 locomotives in 2003 to the Westfälische Almetalbahn GmbH (WAB). This operated the locomotives throughout Germany. The Chemins de fer fribourgeois Gruyère-Friborg-Morat (GFM) joined the Lokoop procurement and bought two of them as Ae 417 (former DB 142 110 and 145). In autumn 2006 they were sold to Eggegebirgsbahn GmbH by the company that is now called Transports publics fribourgeois (TPF) .

At the beginning of 2008, the last locomotive still remaining in Switzerland, namely the Ae 476 012 (formerly Ae 476 468 and DB 142 042) bought directly from Südostbahn (and not yet from Lokoop), started its way back to Germany .

present

WAB 59 leased to DIE-LEI GmbH Kassel in Lollar

The locomotives that returned to Germany were all used by the WAB. Some locomotives were also rented, such as WAB 59 (formerly 142 133) to DIE-LEI GmbH in Kassel or eleven locomotives to the now insolvent Energy Rail GmbH in Cottbus. Thanks to the multiple control system installed by Stadler Rail AG in Switzerland, the last-mentioned railway company used the 142 series in double traction in front of heavy freight trains with a gross weight of up to 2,700 tons. Two vehicles are also in service with the Potsdam railway company .

Museum locomotives

242 151 in Oßmanstedt

There are four museum locomotives. In 1998, the Thuringian Railway Association acquired locomotive 242 151 as a museum locomotive from Deutsche Bahn AG . After its refurbishment, it was rented to the Schweizer Centralbahn AG from June 2008 and has been back in Weimar since the deadline. In addition, the DB Museum has owned 142 255 since 2005 , which is on loan from the BSW group Traditionsgemeinschaft Bw Halle P e. V. , Halle (Saale) . The DB Museum also owns 242 002, which is stored in the Saxon Railway Museum . The IG 58 3047 owns the E 42 001 , which is temporarily used by the PRESS in the planning service .
