The PKP series EU04 was a series of universal electric locomotives of the Polish State Railways .
history
After the Second World War , the Polish railway PKP decided to electrify important main lines in order to increase the line performance. At that time the Polish rail vehicle industry had little experience with electric locomotives, which is why they decided to import them. The choice was made by VEB Lokomotivbau Elektrotechnische Werke "Hans Beimler" Hennigsdorf , one of the largest locomotive factories in the RGW at the time . A prototype was developed from 1952 to 1954 , which was then presented to the PKP.
In 1954 and 1955 a total of 25 locomotives were then delivered to Poland. The serial numbers are LEW 6678/1955 to LEW 6702/1955. The vehicles, initially designated as E200s, were housed in the Warszawa Zachodnia depot in Warsaw . The series numbers were changed in the 1960s, and the locomotives have been referred to as the EU04 series since then.
Structure and technology
Each of the 16,320 mm long locomotives has two identical two-axle bogies that are each equipped with two traction motors. The required current is tapped from the overhead line with two pantographs , the voltage being 3000 volts direct current. With a continuous output of 1680 kW, the maximum speed is 110 km / h.
A locomotive has two driver's cabs , which are located at the top and at the end of the locomotive. A screw coupling is mounted at both ends . Brake hoses and a device for the train busbar are also attached.
commitment
The locomotives, which were initially located in the Warszawa Zachodnia depot in Warsaw, were mainly used on the Warsaw – Gliwice route for both passenger and freight train services. Later they were stationed in Łazy (Lazy) and Krakow . Despite a few shortcomings, the locomotives proved their worth in use and paved the way for further electrification and the procurement of electric locomotives. The biggest disadvantage was the relatively large axle load of 21.5 tonnes, which permanently damaged the routes designed for lower axle loads.
Between 1970 and 1983 all locomotives of the EU04 series retired from service, were parked and scrapped . Only EU04-24 was kept and given to the Museum of Industry and Railways in Jaworzyna Śląska (King's Tent) and is on display there.
