The Thurbo AG is a railway company in eastern Switzerland . It operates regional transport on a route network of 658 km, making it one of the largest railway companies (EVU) in Switzerland alongside the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB ) . It carries around 35 million travelers annually.

The company was founded in 2002 and is 90% owned by SBB and 10% by the Canton of Thurgau . However, it is independent and responsible for the operation. The name Thurbo is a combination of Thur respectively Thur gau and Bo densee .

The infrastructure (route Wil SG - Weinfelden - Kreuzlingen ) of the Mittelthurgau Railway (MThB), which was liquidated in 2003 , became the property of Thurbo, but is maintained by SBB Infrastructure. Thurbo is only active as a railway company operating regional trains.

history

The subsidiary EuroThurbo GmbH existed until 2005 and was responsible for the Seehas and Seehäsle routes in Germany and for the Allgäu Express . These routes were taken over by the German SBB subsidiary SBB GmbH in 2005 because the canton of Thurgau, which owns 10 percent of Thurbo, does not want to bear any economic risks when operating international routes.

The rolling Thurbo consists of 105 locomotives of the type GTW of Stadler Rail (December 2013). The abbreviation GTW stands for articulated railcar. The GTW from Thurbo exist in two versions, on the one hand the short GTW 2/6 and the GTW 2/8 longer by an intermediate car. Ten of these vehicles were GTW 2/6, which were supplemented by an intermediate car and thus became GTW 2/8. The increased number of passengers as well as the additional operation on the Tösstal route made this extension necessary.

  • 41 GTW 2/6 (RABe 526 701–708 + 719-751)
  • 54 GTW 2/8 (RABe 526 752–805; 781–790 ex 709–718)

On January 1, 2018, Thurbo took over 13 trains from SBB, which SBB had taken over from BLS in 2013. Since Thurbo will only need the trains to replace the RABe 526 680-689 from 2021, they have been leased to SBB, which continues to use them on the same routes as before.

  • 13 GTW 2/8 (RABe 526 260–265 + 280–286)

In addition to the types mentioned, Thurbo also has 1st generation GTWs (ex MThB ), which are shorter:

Length: 37.6 m; Seats: 102 (90 + 12); 57 t; built 1998–1999

In the transition period, older rolling stock was also used until 2007. ABDe 536 (EAV) and RBDe 566 (NPZ) were taken over from the former MThB , and RBDe 560 (NPZ) and RBe 540 were also rented from SBB .

advertising

Thurbo rolling stock is also used as advertising space. Radio and Tele TOP have been advertising since the RABe 526 707 with full advertising on the outer skin. One side shows Radio TOP , the other Tele TOP . From 2006 to 2014, the RABe 526 725 highlighted the St. Gallen Theater , with the advertising being adapted due to the program change. Another vehicle has been the RABe 526 779 for Sympany since 2013 and the RABe 526 801 has been promoting the job portal Jobs.ch since February 2017 .

Repeatedly, only partial advertising is used on the drive part. Numerous companies and events, but also the cantons of Thurgau , Schaffhausen , St. Gallen and Aargau advertise on the trains.

criticism

After Thurbo had made a loss of 3.1 million francs in 2013 , the working atmosphere deteriorated . The trade union SEV criticized the poorer working conditions than at the parent company SBB, demanded the wage adjustments provided for in the collective bargaining agreement (GAV) and accused Thurbo of delaying the arbitration process. Thurbo attributes the loss to lower performance compensation from the cantons . The canton of Thurgau justifies the reduction in its compensation with the profits that Thurbo achieved in previous years.
