The SBB GmbH is a subsidiary of Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) - Passenger Division - based in Konstanz in Germany . She has been responsible for the operation of various railway lines in Germany since 2003 and for almost all local traffic on the Basel connecting railway since December 2006 . In the 2012 financial year, the company carried 13 million passengers.

history

When the Swiss Federal Railways were awarded the contract to operate today's S5 and S6 of the trinational S-Bahn Basel - the so-called Wiesentalbahn between Basel and Zell im Wiesental  - they founded SBB GmbH in Lörrach in 2002 . For operation in Germany, six SBB RBDe 560s were converted at short notice , given the designation RBDe 561 and rented out permanently to SBB GmbH.

A similar company existed in Constance in the form of Mittelthurgaubahn Deutschland GmbH , from which EuroThurbo GmbH emerged after the bankruptcy of the parent company Mittelthurgaubahn (MThB) . EuroThurbo was formally a subsidiary of Thurbo , which was founded as a rescue company for the insolvent MThB , in which SBB has held 90% of the share capital since it was founded. The remaining 10% of Thurbo was taken over by the Canton of Thurgau , which, however, was not prepared to take risks abroad and pushed ahead with the transfer of EuroThurbo to SBB GmbH.

At the beginning of 2005, SBB GmbH (old) merged with EuroThurbo GmbH to form SBB GmbH (new) with the above-mentioned lines of the Basel S-Bahn and the earlier EuroThurbo routes Seehas (route Constance - Radolfzell - Singen (Hohentwiel) - Engen , too known as Hegau-Bodensee-Bahn ) and Seehäsle (Radolfzell– Stockach route ), including the rolling stock for the two lines that is still registered with Thurbo. The operation of the Allgäu-Express on the Munich - Buchloe - Kaufbeuren - Kempten (Allgäu) - Oberstdorf route , for which EuroThurbo had applied together with the Bayerische Länderbahn and which they have been running together since December 2003, also switched to SBB GmbH. With the merger through the takeover of EuroThurbo, Konstanz now became the headquarters of SBB GmbH. Local operations management exist or existed in Konstanz, Lörrach and - until December 8, 2007 - in Kempten (Bavaria).

Due to the damaged rolling stock for the Seehäsle and the resulting train cancellations, the contract from the time of the Mittelthurgau Railway was terminated early at the end of 2006. From December 2006 the Hohenzollerische Landesbahn took over the operation of the Seehäsle. SBB GmbH was involved in the Allgäu-Express ("ALEX I") until December 8, 2007, after which the Bavarian Länderbahn took over sole operation.

Former rolling stock

In the Constance section, the old rolling stock was used until the arrival of the ordered nine Flirt multiple units, which was still from the Mittelthurgau Railway (MThB). With the withdrawal of the canton of Thurgau from the shareholders of EuroThurbo at the end of 2004 and the merger of SBB (Deutschland) GmbH and EuroThurbo GmbH in mid-2005, the rolling stock was also adjusted. The modernized EAV rolling stock from the 1960s and the modernized lightweight steel wagons from the 1940s were up for recycling anyway and therefore remained with Thurbo. The four NPZ sets from the 1990s, however, matched the other 126 sets in the SBB portfolio and switched from the Thurbo to the SBB, where they were replaced by the Seehas-Flirt by mid-2006.

The three diesel GTWs procured for the Seehäsle and the two converted control cars also switched to the SBB. The GTW had more and more breakdowns in operation, and the costs for replacement vehicles and renovation work rose. The control cars were used for the first time in 2005, but the sporadic use ended with the failure of all three GTWs. After a final renovation, the GTW was still in use from mid-2006 until the operator change to the Hohenzollerische Landesbahn (HzL) by timetable change in December 2006. They were then sold to Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE) via intermediaries .
