history
The company was founded in 1914 as the Basel Public Health Insurance Fund (ÖKK) as the first public cantonal health insurance company in Switzerland. In 1934 the public health insurance companies that had emerged over the years merged in a loose association. A closer cooperation between the six regional companies united in the association with a common market presence under the ÖKK brand did not take place until 1989.
As a result of various mergers between these regional companies, two large ÖKK insurance companies remained in 2003, ÖKK Basel and ÖKK in Landquart , which is deeply rooted in the canton of Graubünden . The two health insurance companies operated under the common ÖKK brand and worked together in different areas, but were otherwise legally and economically independent of each other. At the end of 2007 the brand cooperation between the two companies was terminated. Associated with the independent branding was the renaming of ÖKK Basel and its subsidiary ÖKK Switzerland Foundation, founded in 2005, to Sympany . At the same time, Krankenkasse 57 joined the renamed company as a former health insurance company of the SMUV trade union , in 2009 the health insurance company Xundheit (the former ÖKK Luzern ) and in 2016 the Kolping Krankenkasse AG .
Until 2008, the company was also active in advising and brokering third-party insurance solutions through its brokerage company Allcons . Before the separation from Allcons at the end of 2008, the premium volume brokered for third parties was 147 million francs. Until 2009, Sympany appeared on the market as an insurer under three brands. The centerpiece was the Vivao Sympany brand , under which insurance solutions were offered for private individuals with a focus on families, professionals and young people. In addition, Moove Sympany is aimed at active, sporty and young people, while Trust Sympany focused exclusively on insurance solutions for companies. Since 2010, the insurance company has been offering all services for private individuals and companies under the uniform Sympany brand .
