The RBe 4/4 were passenger railcars with a high performance of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) from the years 1959 to 1966. The vehicles modernized between 1993 and 1998 were given the new designation RBe 540 and were gradually withdrawn from scheduled traffic between 2005 and 2014 withdrawn.

history

The railcars were acquired by the SBB from 1959 to replace the older electric locomotives with three drive axles, the Ae 3/5 and Ae 3/6. They had a high performance - more than the Re 4/4 I locomotives -, recuperation brakes , driver's cabs on both sides and front doors as well as a multiple control IIId (Vst IIId) for combination with suitable control cars type DZt and BDt, NPZ control car, Re 4/4 II / Re 421 , Re 4/4 III , Re 4/4 IV and Re 6/6 . The vehicles originally had 64 second-class seats, 32 smokers and 32 non-smokers and were painted in SBB green.

The first six prototypes, No. 1401 to 1406, cost around one million Swiss francs each and were delivered in 1959 and 1960, respectively. The first vehicle was presented to the press on May 24, 1959. The prototypes had some shortcomings that were eliminated in the series version. The 76 series railcars, No. 1407 to 1482, were put into service between 1963 and 1966 and were four tons heavier than the prototypes.

Most of the technical equipment was installed under the passenger compartment, which meant that the entrances were significantly higher than for normal wagons. Instead of passenger compartments, the toilet and some of the technology were arranged in the middle of the vehicle. The step shift with 28 speed steps was a bit rough and gave these vehicles the nickname " Schüttelbecher" .

From 1992 onwards, the 74 series railcars that were still in existence were modernized by the main SBB workshop in Zurich and adapted to the requirements of S-Bahn operations. A thyristor load switch was installed. As a result, there was no passenger compartment with 4 seats. Automatic outward swinging doors were installed for conductorless operation, and the railcars were converted for shuttle train operation with the standard cars I and II (also automatic outward swinging doors) that had already been adapted for the NPZ ("New Pendelzug") . The vehicles have also been optically adapted to the NPZ since 1991 and received the new "Kolibri" regional train color scheme; the plastic seats have been replaced by fabric seats.

At the same time as the conversion, the numbering was changed to the new series scheme, with postponements due to the beginning of the counting method with the final digit 0 and due to two vehicles that have already been discarded (1419, 1454):

  • (RBe 540 000–005 was reserved, but was not used for the prototypes 1401 to 1406)
  • RBe 540 006–017: former vehicles RBe 4/4 1407–1418
  • RBe 540 018-051: former vehicles RBe 4/4 1420-1453
  • RBe 540 052–079: former vehicles RBe 4/4 1455–1482

The prototypes, which were never redrawn in the series scheme, were given eye-catching reflective warning strips on the front for use on the Seetalbahn and were therefore also referred to as Seetal-RBe 4/4 .

RBe 4/4 1405 of the Koblenz Depot and Rail Vehicle Association in Tägerwilen-Gottlieben.

The vehicles 1401–1403 (age-related), 1419 (accident in St-Triphon; 1972), 1454 (fire between Uster and Aathal; 1990), 540 008 (fire between Safenwil and Walterswil-Striegel; 1998) and 540 were scrapped by 2005 023 (fire in Eglisau; 2000). The RBe 540 019 was sold to the Oensingen-Balsthal-Bahn (OeBB) in June 2005 , as was the 540 074; 540 006 is available in Balsthal as a spare parts donor. From 2006, the railcars were scrapped in large numbers. At OeBB, the operation ended at the end of 2015, the last SBB machines were officially scrapped in July 2016.

The RBe 4/4 1405 has been in use as a historic vehicle at the Koblenz Depot and Rail Vehicle Association since 2007 . It has now received TSI number 94 85 7540 005-6. Three vehicles were taken over by the SBB Historic Heritage Foundation (540 020, 540 052, 540 069), 2 of which are to be preserved as drivable historic vehicles in their last operating condition, the third is intended as a spare parts donor. The RBe 540 074 of the OeBB was taken over by the DSF, but it is intended as a work car. At the moment it looks like three vehicles will be preserved in the long term.

business

As RBe 4/4

After their delivery, the six prototypes were used in express train services in the lowlands. Long shuttle trains, some of which also contained dining cars, were formed with the FZt4ü (today DZt) control car with baggage and mail compartments, which were delivered at the same time . The series RBe 4/4 were also initially used in long-distance traffic, due to the lack of suitable control cars as pure locomotives with mostly locked passenger compartments. It was only with the more intensive procurement of Re 4/4 II that the RBe 4/4 could be used for their actual purpose of being used in express trains and regional transport. For this purpose, seventy control cars (forty DZt EW II and thirty BDt EW II) were procured in several lots from 1966 to 76 .

As RBe 540 after the modernization

Even after the modernization, the RBe 540 were typically used together with one or two standard cars I or II and a BDt control car in regional train services.

From 1985 onwards, further control cars were acquired through conversion (BDt ex B EW I, some with driver's cabs ex DZt, and BDt ex ABt EW I). Along with the modernization, the standard cars I / II and the control cars were also adapted. Such units were also rented by Thurbo for use on the St. Gallen S-Bahn until 2005 , in other parts of the country they served less frequented regional lines and supplemented the services of the NPZ compositions at peak times , but were gradually replaced by more modern vehicles the types Stadler GTW and Stadler FLIRT or replaced by modernized NPZ, which were replaced by the aforementioned vehicles.

Double commuters could be found on additional trains of the Zurich S-Bahn on weekdays; Compositions consisting of one RBe 540 each at the front and rear as well as four to six modernized EW I and EW II in between.

One railcar drove to the end with a converted control car with a luggage compartment as a prison train ; he then pulled or pushed the control car with the matching Kolibri coloring and the inscription SECURITAS , the name of the Swiss security company responsible for the operation.
