The Oensingen-Balsthal-Bahn AG (official initials OeBB , also to distinguish it from the Austrian Federal Railways ÖBB) based in Balsthal is a private railway company in the canton of Solothurn (Switzerland). Its four-kilometer normal-gauge route leads from Oensingen to Balsthal.

history

Oensingen-Balsthal Railway Company dated December 31, 1919

The desire arose early on to establish a rail link with Basel through the Klus von Balsthal and under the Passwang or Unteren Hauenstein . In 1873 the construction of the Wasserfallenbahn between the Baselbieter town Reigoldswil and the Solothurn town Mümliswil behind Balsthal began, but after a year the construction of the tunnel and the access routes had to be stopped due to financial difficulties. The Jura-Gotthard Railway project did not even get beyond the planning stage .

In the 1890s, the Balsthal-Klus ( Von Roll ) industry sought a connection to the Jura foot line in Oensingen. On July 17, 1899, the short branch line was able to start operating. The OeBB line has been completely electrified since 1943.

today

With the implementation of Bahn 2000 and the “Thal 2005” traffic concept, a half-hourly service was introduced, which is supplemented by Postbus courses at peak times . Before that, there was a timetable for a few years with postbus courses as a basic offer and some trains at peak times. For the introduction of the half-hourly service, a shuttle train set was initially acquired from Regionalverkehr Mittelland (RM), but this was soon replaced by an SBB-RBe 540 shuttle train set . The external addresses of the shuttle train taken over by SBB were changed to OeBB, the paintwork was retained. Since the takeover of an NPZ prototype set from the SBB in 2007/2008, it has generally operated with the RBe-540 shuttle train as a replacement. When the timetable changed at the end of 2015, OeBB rented a modernized “Domino” composition from SBB. Since the Domino ran a whole 1st class car, the exterior address of the 1st class car was changed to one third of the first class and two thirds of the second class. The equipment of the former 1st class was not changed. The OeBB logo was affixed to the outside of the still existing 1st class. For the timetable change at the end of 2018, the OeBB domino was adapted to that of the SBB and different domino sets operate on the OeBB, each of which is supplied from Biel / Bienne.

OeBB has many former, partly historic, SBB and BLS vehicles and can therefore also offer nostalgic trips, for example with the “ Red Arrow ”. Discarded and sold vehicles are shown in italics.
