Location of the municipality | |
Oensingen is a municipality in the Gäu district in the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland .
geography
Oensingen is located in the Mittelland at the foot of the Jura and at the exit of the Klus , which the thin ones from Balsthal cut through the mountain. The Jura slopes make up about 40% of the community area and are very heavily forested. The highest point is the Wannenfluh at 1033 m above sea level. M. , other striking points are the Roggenfluh at 995 m above sea level. M. , the Lehnfluh and the Ravelle. With an area of around 12 km², Oensingen is the largest municipality in the Gäu district.
Oensingen is a prime example of urban sprawl in the Central Plateau. The place, whose original village center is in the lower part of the village , initially moved to the train station further to the west. In contrast to traditional industrial regions, the new industry was not located near the village center, but in the direction of the neighboring town of Niederbipp . This in turn established a large industrial zone, which is why Oensingen and Niederbipp have grown together today. The urban sprawl is now so extensive that the areas along the main road from Oensingen to Wiedlisbach are almost continuously built - although the two town centers are around 8 kilometers apart.
history
The place name Oensingen is of Alemannic origin and originated around the 6th century. It is interpreted as an Ongis taking up residence. Oensingen is mentioned for the first time in a document in 968. At that time, Konrad von Burgund confirmed that Oingesingin cum ecclesia belonged to the Münster-Granfelden Monastery .
The oldest human traces go back to the Paleolithic : A reindeer bone with an engraved ibex was found in the «Rislisberg Cave» . The bowl stone with 8 bowls and various figures on the southern slope of the Ravelle comes from a later time .
In Roman times, Oensingen was the largest Roman settlement between Olten and Solothurn and was located on a strategically important branch of trade and military routes.
The remains of four castles from the Middle Ages on the Lehnfluh also testify to its importance. In the first half of the 13th century, the Neu-Bechburg , which is still preserved and can be seen from afar, was built by the barons of Bechburg . After various owners, it came to the city of Solothurn in 1463.
The Catholic parish church of St. George was built in the middle of the 16th century, expanded from 1643 to 1648 and renovated in 1773 by Paolo Antonio Pisoni .

The local council (executive) consists of 7 members including the mayor. The election results for the last three terms of office were as follows:

traffic
In 1876 the Swiss Central Railway opened the Gäubahn from Olten to Solothurn. Today the route is part of the southern Jura foot line of the SBB . In 1899 the Oensingen-Balsthal-Bahn (OeBB) began operating on the railway line to Balsthal. From 1907 to 1943, the meter-gauge Langenthal-Jura Railway also ran to Oensingen. Today the Oensingen station is served by trains of the SBB, the OeBB and, since 2012, after the reconstruction of the meter-gauge connection Niederbipp-Oensingen, also the Aare Seeland .
In 1965 it was connected to the A1 motorway . This event has had a decisive impact on the village to this day, above all through the subsequent settlement of logistics companies.

In 2020, a fixed measuring probe for 24-hour monitoring of the groundwater quality is to be installed in the Moos pumping station .
