The Neu-Bechburg , also known as Schloss Neu-Bechburg , is a spur castle in Oensingen , Switzerland .
history
The castle was built in 1250 by the barons of Bechburg . After that she changed hands several times. Among these are the Counts of Frohburg , Nidau , Thierstein , Kyburg and Buchegg . In 1415 the castle and rule were sold to Bern and Solothurn . In 1463 the castle became the sole property of Solothurn and a bailiff's seat was established.
In 1635 the castle temporarily became the seat of the Bishop of Basel . In 1798 the castle lost its importance with the French invasion . It then served as a poor house, private apartment, tavern and finally as a quarry. In 1835 it was acquired by Johannes Riggenbach from Basel. His son Friedrich restored the castle from 1880.
The heirs of Georg Wackernagel-Riggenbach sold the castle to the Oensingen honorary citizen Dr. Walter Pfluger-Baumgartner, who donated them to the “Neu-Bechburg Castle Foundation”.
Location and structure
The castle is located on a ledge 86 meters long and on average 14 meters wide below the rye. In terms of design, it is one of the spur castles , but all sides are attached.
The castle has been rebuilt several times over the years. Only parts of the east castle have survived from its original state, with its almost 30 meter high round donjon , which is crenellated and piled up from rubble stones . To the west of the keep are the Rittergaden, the Palas and an open terrace. In earlier times the terrace was built over and formed the western castle, of which a small tower has been preserved at the western end of the terrace.
