The Gäu district (called “das Gäu” ) in the canton of Solothurn is part of the Gäus in Solothurn . Name 1841–1987: District Balsthal-Gäu.
location
The Gäu is bounded in the north by the first chain of the Jura Mountains and in the south by the Aare . It is intersected by the two most important motorways in Switzerland: the east-west axis A1 and the north-south axis A2 , which intersect in the Härkingen motorway triangle. Various logistics centers have accumulated on the motorways and the railway line in recent decades. Away from the main traffic routes, the Gäu has largely retained its rural character.
District capital is Oensingen . The district of Gäu forms together with the district of Thal the Amtei Thal-Gäu , whose main town is Balsthal . The district should not be confused with the Solothurnian Gäu , which also includes parts of today's Olten district.
