The Solothurnian Gäu (the Gäu ), the region between Oensingen and Olten , is bounded in the north by the first chain of the Jura and in the south by the Aare . In addition to the actual Gäu district, it also consists of the municipalities of the Untergäus in the Olten district : Wangen bei Olten, Hägendorf, Rickenbach, Gunzgen, Kappel, Boningen and Fulenbach.

history

The Solothurnian Gäu is the current name for the part of the former county of Buchsgau , which came into the possession of the city of Solothurn in 1463 . The area was divided from west to east into the following bailiwicks and offices: Bechburg bailiff, upper office (Oensingen, Oberbuchsiten, Niederbuchsiten, Kestenholz and, since 1540, Wolfwil); Vogtei Falkenstein, external office (Egerkingen, Härkingen, Neuendorf and until 1540 Wolfwil); Vogtei Bechburg, lower office (former office Fridau , today's Untergäu, associated villages see above). The latter became part of the Olten district in Helvetica in 1798 and later the Olten district, the other two areas became part of the Balsthal district in 1798, Balsthal-Gäu district from 1841, and Gäu district from 1988.

The Gäubahn line has existed since 1876 .
