Fridau (Switzerland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fridau was the name of a small town that was founded around the middle of the 13th century by the Counts of Frohburg in Switzerland at an Aare crossing near Fulenbach ( Canton Solothurn ). Today the area of the former Fridau belongs to the political municipality of Fulenbach. Only the corridor and quarter name Statt reminds of the former small town.

The origin of Fridau was a tower built by the Counts of Frohburg around 1230 on the southern bank of the Aare, which secured the ferry crossing. Probably shortly after the middle of the 13th century, the Frohburgers had a bridge built here and founded the small town of Fridau on the north side of the Aare, which as a bridgehead also had property on the other side of the Aare. The town was first mentioned in a document in 1253 under the name Fridowe .

Despite its function as a river crossing, Fridau always remained insignificant, but became the center of the Fridau rulership of the same name, which was part of the Buchsgau ruled by the Counts of Frohburg . Since 1310 the dominion of Fridau was divided between the Counts of Frohburg and Nidau. As early as the middle of the 14th century , only a few people lived in the town next to the castle. The lordship was pledged from 1358 and from 1366 belonged entirely to Duke Rudolf IV of Austria.

The final decline of the small town of Fridau took place in 1375, when it was destroyed by the Guglers along with the castle and the Aare bridge . Since the place no longer had any political significance before its destruction, it was no longer rebuilt. In contrast, the Fridau rule lived on. In 1379 it came to Anna von Kyburg, a descendant of the Counts of Nidau, but in 1405 it had to be pledged to the Basel guild master Conrad von Laufen. From 1415 the rule was administered jointly by Bern and Solothurn and in 1463 came under the sole administration of Solothurn, where it was assigned to the Bechburg Bailiwick and formed the court district of the Lower Office.
