Status and history
The districts of the canton of Solothurn have served as constituencies for the occupation of the cantonal parliament since the 19th century. They are largely identical to the previous Bailiwick areas of the outgoing Ancien Régime , so they developed certain cultural independence based on the long tradition. The Solothurn city district is a special case here, because it was a historical rulership center and thus of course never a rural bailiwick area. Even after the liberal revolution of 1830 , certain political privileges remained there; the capital was allowed to claim a significantly disproportionate number of seats in the cantonal council in relation to its population ( census voting rights ). The principle of one man, one vote only prevailed in the course of the 19th century.
In 2002, with the reduction of the Cantonal Council to 100 seats ( see : referendum of March 3, 2002 ), the districts lost their constituency function. The constituencies are now identical to the offices , which each comprise two districts. Since then, the Solothurn district has been in a joint constituency with the Lebern district .
From a geographical point of view, the Solothurn district is the only district in the canton that does not border on any other canton.
