Location of the municipality | |
Reigoldswil ( Swiss German : Reigetschwyl ) is a municipality in the Waldenburg district of the canton of Basel-Landschaft in Switzerland . It is the farthest place in the valley of the rear Frenke .
history
The oldest written mention of Reigoldswil comes from the year 1152. King Friedrich I takes the Beinwil monastery under his protection and confirms all possessions, including his own property in Rigoldswilre . From 1529 the residents of the Frenkental converted to the Reformed faith. In 1832 it became part of the canton of Basel-Landschaft.
When silk ribbon weaving was introduced as homework in the Basel area , there were also numerous trimmings looms in Reigoldswil . The dependence on the "silk ribbon gentlemen" led to an economically one-sided orientation towards the city of Basel. In the wake of the global economic crisis , home work on silk ribbon quickly came to a standstill. The last loom was abandoned in 1977. As a new economic factor, medium-sized businesses settled in the Upper Basel area and day-to-day tourism was discovered.
Surname
Reigoldswil is a compound -wil -name. The old German personal name Rigold or Regold is in the first link . The -wil is an abbreviated form of the French-speaking villare, which means “belonging to the estate”. Reigoldswil therefore means: 'At Rigolds / Regold's homestead'.
In Switzerland , many place names end with -wil. Variants are -willer in France and -wihl, -weil or -weiler in southern Germany and Austria .
traffic
At the beginning of the 20th century, the municipality was connected to the canton capital Liestal by the AAGL's first licensed bus line in Switzerland . In 1873 the Wasserfallen railway project failed . As the valley station of the Wasserfallenbahn (gondola) and thanks to its good connection to the public transport network, Reigoldswil is a popular starting point for day trips.
