The Railway Museum in Warsaw (Muzeum Kolejnictwa w Warszawie) was housed in the now-closed Warsaw Central Railway Station (" Warszawa Główna ") near the city center of Warsaw .

history

The museum opened in 1931 on an area of ​​900 square meters on Warsaw's Nowy Zjazd Street. At first the collection consisted only of models, small parts of the railway, photos and literature. After the Second World War, the exhibits were first relocated to Pilawa and later to Bytom . It was not until 1972 that the museum was able to move into its location on Towarowastraße. In 1995 it was separated from the PKP structure and placed under the Polish Ministry of Transport. As part of the local government reform in 1998, the museum was assigned to the Warsaw City Council. In 2009 the interior and the exterior of the museum were completely renovated. The museum has been closed since March 21, 2016. In the meantime it has reopened under the name Stacja Muzeum , but the outdoor area can be viewed very limited due to construction work. It is planned to move to the Odolany district further west .

Indoor

The museum had an indoor area of ​​800 square meters with two large exhibition halls in which the history of the Polish railways from 1845 was traced. An extensive specialist library was attached.

Outdoor area

In the outdoor area, historical locomotives were shown on the remaining rails of the former train station. Due to the changeful history of Poland, many vehicles from German production were found here. Among the most important exhibits an included Wehrmachts - armored (consisting of a tank railcars 16 / WR 550 D 14 and an engagement car) of 1943 and the saloon car of the former Polish President and ZK-General Bolesław Bierut .
