Wednesday was a German-English rock band. It was founded in Berlin in 1975 and dissolved in 1980. In 2000 she made a brief comeback.

history

The group emerged from the meeting of five studio musicians from the West Berlin folk rock scene. Since the folk-pub rehearsed in a music club at that time always on Wednesdays, one of the club operators suggested the group as the band name "Wednesday".

Initially influenced by bands like the Eagles and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young , the band around the Englishman Gary Gordon and the Afro-German Chris Franklin was a popular live act in West Berlin from 1976 onwards. She was the opening act for Barclay James Harvest at the historic free concert on August 30, 1980 in front of the Reichstag building in West Berlin in front of an audience of more than 100,000.

Wednesday was characterized by five-part arranged vocal parts. Her greatest success was the a cappella piece Custer's Last Dream , a composition by Chris Franklin and arranged by Gary Gordon. The lyrics were written by Gyllianna, the ex-wife of drummer Hübi. To this day it is published in cover versions.

Her first LP A Way to Get High was released in 1978 and was produced by Frank Zander and recorded in the Hansa Studios in Berlin .

The second LP, A New Morning , was released by Polydor in 1979 and was produced by Steve Hackett producer John Acock . It was recorded at DGG Studios, Hamburg and Dick James Music, London.

After the brief appearance in front of the Reichstag, Wednesday broke up in 1980, as no agreement could be reached on the further musical path. Shortly afterwards, some of the musicians founded the band FOX and recorded a German-language album of the same name in 1981. A GDR tour followed in 1983. In 1985 they split up, with paths crossing again and again in a wide variety of formations (e.g. Purple Haze, Past Perfect, Acoustic Hippies and Chris Franklin's Good Company).

Reunion 2000 to 2003

In 2001 the band, reinforced by the studio musician Chris Evans on drums, gave a comeback concert in Berlin's Quasimodo and played old and new songs at other concerts. It broke up three years later.

The two former band members Chris Franklin and Detlef Goy perform with Friedemann Benner and Ingolf Kurkowski under the name "Acoustic Hippies" mainly in the Berlin area. Franklin is also active in the formation "Chris Franklin's Good Company".

Guitarist Gary Gordon and keyboardist Frank Turba have been members of the Berlin cover band Past Perfect since 2007.
