Jona Lewie (* 14. March 1947 in Southampton , United Kingdom as John Lewis ) is a British pop singer , songwriter and multi-instrumentalist .

Career

In 1968 Jona Lewie studied sociology at London University in London. He also played in a band with Dave Brock , who later founded Hawkwind , recorded songs under his own name and worked as a session musician, among others. a. on Arthur Crudups LP Roebuck Man . In mid-1969 he went to the USA for some time and recorded several songs there. Back in London, Jona finished his studies and joined the band Brett Marvin & the Thunderbolts , with whom he recorded several songs for the British blues anthology Gasoline .

In the midst of the heyday of heavy and glam rock , between the former Beatles who were active as solo artists and the rebirth of the Rolling Stones as a live band, Brett Marvin & the Thunderbolts seemed rather anachronistic with their mix of skiffle , blues , marquee music and humor. But there were a lot of people who loved the fun the band brought to their concerts in clubs and colleges. After a series of rather unsuccessful singles , the group recorded the song Seaside Shuffle written by Jona Lewie in 1972 , which is strongly reminiscent of the summer hit of the previous year, In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry . The band themselves did not really know whether they wanted to be identified with the song - and released it under the pseudonym Terry Dactyl & the Dinosaurs on Jonathan King's music label UK Records .

Jonas' accordion and TV appearances in deckchairs with umbrellas ensured that Seaside Shuffle rose to number 2 in the British charts in the summer of 1972 (on August 12, 1972), ahead of Alice Cooper's School’s Out . The single was also able to score in the charts in Germany , the Netherlands , Belgium , France and Spain - a success that the band could not repeat, even if they released other singles under their "new" band name. In 1975, Brett Marvin & the Thunderbolts broke up - by the way, no one called "Brett Marvin" has ever played at them.

Jona Lewie got a recording contract as a solo artist and released various singles with Sonet Records , which brought him minor successes in Western Europe. It was only when he switched to the Stiff label in 1980 that he achieved further commercial success in his home country: You'll Always Find Me in the Kitchen at Parties was a top 20 hit, and Stop the Cavalry  - an anti-war Christmas carol - rose for Christmas In 1980 it reached number 3 in the charts and was a real international hit with top 10 listings in eleven countries.

Since then, Lewie has lived on the royalties that Stop the Cavalry brings every Christmas and on the income from some smart investments. In December 2005, the British television station Channel 4 asked him to record a new Christmas single with other old stars who had Christmas hits in the UK: Bring Back the Christmas Number One .
