David Anthony "Dave" Brock (born August 20, 1941 in Isleworth , Middlesex , England ) is an English musician (guitar, bass, synthesizer , vocals) and songwriter . He was best known as the founder and only constant member of the space rock band Hawkwind .

biography

Born in Islewood , Brock grew up in Feltham . At the age of 12 he got a banjo from his uncle and later a guitar from his parents . In 1959 he graduated from school. After a few jobs, Brock worked in an animation studio. He spent the evenings in clubs like Crawdaddy or Eel Pie Island , where jazz and blues were played. In front of the clubs he played with friends, including Eric Clapton , Keith Relf and Mick Slattery.

With the pianist Mike King and the harmonica player Luke Francis he formed the trio "Dharma Blues Band", the 1966 Dealing with the Devil by Sonny Boy Williamson II. And Roll ʼEm Pete by Pete Johnson for the album Blues Anytime Vol. 2 (Immediate, IMPC015). The group also accompanied American blues musicians such as Memphis Slim and champion Jack Dupree . After Brock's departure, the Dharma Blues Band recorded an album in 1967.

Brock trundled through Europe as a street musician. In 1967 he formed the trio "The Famous Cure" with Pete Judd (harmonica) and John Illingworth (guitar). They made some recordings in the Netherlands. With Mick Slattery instead of Judd, they recorded the single Sweet Mary / Mean Mistreater , which made it to number 5 in the Netherlands.

Street musician again, Brock joined a band that toured the UK in a double-decker bus, performed at the Royal Albert Hall and contributed the song Bring It on Home to the album The Buskers (Columbia, SX6356) .

Hawkwind

In 1969, Brock and Slattery formed a band that became known as Hawkwind. The original line-up also included bassist John Harrison, drummer Terry Ollis, keyboard player Dik Mik and saxophonist Nik Turner .

Brock was the only permanent member of the band, whose line-up changed frequently. He also wrote most of the music, with the lyrics often coming from others, such as the poets Robert Calvert and Michael Moorcock .
