Sonet Records , also Sonet Grammofon AB is a jazz and blues label, founded in Sweden in 1956.

History of the label

Sonet Records was founded in 1957 by Sven Lindholm and Gunnar Bergström , who had previously built up a record import business. In 1960 Dag Häggquist joined them, who at the age of 16 had already started importing American jazz records with an older partner; first album was Miles Davis ' Blue Moods , at the time the first 12-inch record on the Swedish market. In March 1957 Dag Häggquist produced his first EP with the American jazz trumpeter Benny Bailey ; he also met Rune Öfwerman , a popular jazz pianist in Sweden at the time; with him he founded the small label Gazell Records . They had their first hit with Öfwermann's jazz trio ( Old Spice ).

Through a local record dealer he finally got to know Lindholm and Bergström, who had just started their Sonet label; they took over the jazz catalog from Gazell Recordds ; Dag Häggquist became a partner in the company. With the rise of the record industry in the early 1960s, they also had success with Bill Haley records . Eventually the company expanded into the film and video business and later took over the Danish record label Storyville Records . In addition to Scandinavian musicians such as Alrune Rod , Svend Asmussen , Arne Domnerus , Rolf Ericson , Lars Gullin , Bengt Hallberg , Karin Krog, the Sonet label has published numerous recordings by American musicians such as Chet Baker , Ruby Braff , Bob Brookmeyer , Benny Carter , Don Cherry , Al Cohn , Art Farmer , Dizzy Gillespie , Lionel Hampton , Barney Kessel , Adam Makowicz , New York Contemporary Five , Archie Shepp , Zoot Sims Joey Tempest and Toots Thielemans , but also by Johnny Dyani with Mongezi Feza and Okay Temiz . In addition, numerous blues albums appeared on Sonet , such as by Albert Collins , Lil'Ed Williams , Lonnie Mack and Lonnie Brooks .

Lindholm and Bergström ran the company until the 1980s. In 1990 the Sonet catalog was taken over by PolyGram and in 1998 by the Universal Music Group .
