Lonnie Brooks

Lonnie Brooks , actually Lee Baker, Jr. (* 18 December 1933 in Dubuisson , Louisiana ; † 1. April 2017 in Chicago ) was an American blues - guitarist .

Brooks originally wanted to play the banjo like his grandfather, but soon got into the guitar, playing rock 'n' roll , country and R&B . Clifton Chenier signed him for the "Red Hot Louisiana Band".

In the second half of the 1950s, Brooks recorded a number of rock and roll hits as "Guitar Junior". He toured with Sam Cooke and got stuck in Chicago in 1960 . There was already a Guitar Junior there, so he changed his stage name to Lonnie Brooks.

Brooks joined Jimmy Reed's band and also recorded his own singles. In 1969 his first album Broke And Hungry was released, again under the name Guitar Junior, which he then finally dropped. He developed his own style, which was called "Voodoo Blues".

In 1978 a blues anthology came out, Living Chicago Blues, which contained four tracks by Brooks and helped him to a recording deal. Several successful albums followed.

Lonnie Brooks is also known for his energetic live performances. His son Ronnie Baker Brooks follows in his father's footsteps. Together they recorded the song Like Father, Like Son in 1991 . In 2010, Brooks was inducted into the Blues Foundation's Blues Hall of Fame .

His son Ronnie Baker Brooks is also a blues musician (as is his son Wayne Baker Brooks).
