In the Summertime (English around for. "In the summer time" ) is one of Ray Dorset written and by the British band Mungo Jerry in 1970 published pop song as a top-selling summer hit is true of all time.

History of origin

Mungo Jerry was founded and discovered just months before the title was released. The discoverer is the producer Barry Murray from Pye Records . He was looking for an unusual band for the progressive daughter label Dawn .

Mungo Jerry - In the Summertime (Maxi-Single)

It was not until the end of April 1970 that the group name Mungo Jerry was set and, under the supervision of producer Barry Murray, a total of 17 tracks were recorded, including In the Summertime, written by group founder Ray Dorset . Dorset had not conceived the song as a summer hit, but wanted to glorify the easy lifestyle in general. Producer Murray was most likely to choose In the Summertime as the group's first record release, even though the band actually wanted the second A-side title Mighty Man as a single (although this song was also played a lot on radio stations in 1970). On May 22, 1970, there was initially no ordinary single under the catalog number Dawn DNX 2502 , the first form of publication was rather the world's first maxi single . It was sold for the same price as the later released single. The release was unusual in that the record could be played at only 33 revolutions per minute (like an LP ) (instead of the usual 45). It was also available in an illustrated case; this principle would not find widespread application in England until years later. In the Summertime was the first maxi single in the world and a pioneer for later maxi singles and today's maxi CDs.

Mungo Jerry - In the Summertime (Single)

Only for use in music boxes did the parent label Pye Records decide on a real single (catalog number Pye 7N 2502 ), which is now a collector's item. Banjo player Paul King blows, similar to a youth band , over a bulbous wine bottle and creates together with the stomp board of guitarist and singer Ray Dorset, the clacking double bass of Mike Cole and the honky tonk piano of Colin Earl a characteristic, rhythmically swinging drum-less Goodtime sound that is a mixture of blues, skiffle and Latin music. The song was recorded - contrary to popular media reports - without the use of a washboard. Percussion player Joe Rush only joined the band at their live concert ("Mungomania") at the Hollywood Festival, which was successful in the media, and the chart album "You don´t have to be in the Army" (1972), which was only two years ago later appeared. In the Summertime's music is catchy and has a simple melody that is very recognizable. The text celebrates the carefree summer time with alcohol, cars and girls and achieved the status of a typical summer hit thanks to its perfect timing, with the title only being sung at the beginning and end of the text and without a chorus (hookline). To lengthen the recording, a starting engine noise was leveled in, a Triumph sports car by sound engineer Howard Barry, whose passing noise is expressed in the stereo effect by changing the stereo channels. Together with Mighty Man and the B-side Dust Pneumonia Blues , the title was released as the world's first maxi single.

One day after the release, the band appeared for the first time under the name Mungo Jerry at the Hollywood Music Festival in Newcastle in the supporting program, where the newcomer caused enthusiasm among the audience. Viewers didn't choose Grateful Dead or any of the other well-known bands for a repeat appearance the next day, but Mungo Jerry. The corresponding media coverage and the hype about "Mungomania" quickly helped the title In the Summertime, which was recently released as a single, to great popularity, to airplay on all radio stations and consequently to rapid success.

reception

The song entered the UK charts on June 6, 1970, where it was number one for seven weeks from the second week. In the Summertime reached the top position in a further 26 countries, including Germany (a total of seven weeks from August 22, 1970). In the USA he only came in third. While 800,000 copies were sold in Great Britain, a total of one million copies went over the counter in France, 400,000 of them in the first month after publication alone (on November 23, 1971, Mungo Jerry was awarded the gold record at the Paris Olympia ). With six million copies, the track was the best-selling single worldwide in 1970. The estimated total sales of the single - which was also published several times in the original (including again in 2005 by Pye / Dawn shortly before Mungo Jerry's move to the record company Polydor) varies greatly: Experts assume 23 million units (for this value, Mungo Jerry awarded the Sony Award "for the greatest summer hit of all time" in 2000); the number of 30 million copies includes publications on compilation LPs and CDs. Regardless of the different sales figures, In the Summertime is still the most successful summer hit.

The piece has been translated into more than 40 languages, including Chinese.

Since the year of publication, In the Summertime has been re-recorded by numerous performers, and there should be a total of 28 cover versions. Even Bob Dylan recorded the Mungo Jerry song on a bootleg. Shaggy achieved the most successful cover in 1995 after Mungo Jerry himself had led a cover to number 1 on the British indie charts as Mungo Jerry & Brothers Grimm . His single, the music of which the original interpreter Mungo Jerry (Ray Dorset) had personally re-recorded himself, reached No. 1 on the charts in 1995 in the USA and Great Britain as the successor single to "Mr. Bombastic". A year later, the Shaggy version for the new "Flipper movie" was remixed again and again hit the US charts. In 2010 - the year of the 40th anniversary of the song - original performer Mungo Jerry recorded the summer anthem in a danceable garb together with drum and bass specialist Bluestone and rapper MC Skibadee and made it to the top of the British dance charts -Twenty placement (No. 15).
