biography

Jonathan King 1969 in London

As a student at Cambridge University , Jonathan King wrote his first hit, Everyone's Gone to the Moon , which became a million-seller in the USA . At the age of 22, Jonathan King was a manager at Decca Records , and at 25 he owned his own label, UK Records .

Over the next few years he released a number of records under different pseudonyms: Als Sakkarin Sugar, Sugar (1971, UK 12th, DE 21st) and Hang On Sloopy (1971, DE 38th); as Shag Loop Di Love (1972, UK 4th place); under the name One Hundred Tons & a Feather It Only Takes a Minute or as Bubblerock Satisfaction . His records were also released as Weathermen ( It's the Same Old Song ), 53rd & 3rd, Sound 9418, Piglets, Angelettes and Father Abraphart & the Smurps. A total of around 30 pseudonyms are known. Under which other names he was heard without a hit, probably only himself knows. King once claimed that he had "20 recordings under 20 different names in the top 30 at the same time". In 1975 he had another hit under his own name with Una Paloma Blanca (UK number 5).

On the side, Jonathan King wrote about pop music in a number of music magazines, produced the first LP of the group Genesis in 1967 , to which he also gave its name, and promoted or discovered groups such as 10cc , Kursaal Flyers , Bay City Rollers or Hedgehoppers Anonymous .

He had been a superstar on British television since the early 1980s. He reported regularly from his second residence in New York City on the BBC program Entertainment USA . He also had his own weekly column in the British newspaper The Sun on the subject of pop music. In 1997, Jonathan King was the driving force behind Grand Prix winner Katrina and the Waves . From 1998 he was looking for future record stars for the media group Sanctuary Music.

In 2001 he was sentenced to seven years in prison for sexually abusing five boys between the ages of 14 and 16. These were incidents from 1983 to 1989. He was found guilty on the basis of many testimonies in a circumstantial trial and was serving this sentence in Belmarsh Prison . In March 2005, after serving half his sentence, King was released from custody. He himself denies his guilt to this day. The cases for which he was convicted are to be re-examined by the European Court of Human Rights . King then wants to present new evidence (including an alibi for one of the alleged days of the crime). Since his conviction, there has been controversial debate among the British public as to whether Jonathan King is a dangerous criminal or just the victim of outdated morals or ethics.

King has been back in the music business since his release. He discovered the band Orson on MySpace and helped them to a record deal. In 2007 he released a new album, "Earth to King" .

On September 9, 2015, it was announced that King was arrested again as part of "Operation Ravine". The proceedings were closed in August 2018 due to procedural errors.
