Joe Garland

Joseph Copeland Garland (born August 15, 1903 in Norfolk , Virginia , † April 21, 1977 in Teaneck , New Jersey ) was an American jazz saxophonist , composer and arranger .

life and career

Joe Garland was the brother of the trumpeter Moses Garland . He studied at the Aeolian Conservatory in Baltimore , played in the 1920s with Elmer Snowden and Leon Abbey , in the Blue Rhythm Band (1931-1937) with Don Redman (1938) and with Louis Armstrong (in the band of Luis Russell , 1939-1941 ). Then he worked for Claude Hopkins and Earl Hines . For a short time he was also the band leader of the "Stell-Orchestra". He also recorded with Jelly Roll Morton , Duke Ellington and Henry Red Allen . He was also one of the most important composers for Glenn Miller . He wrote compositions for him that are still considered to be the jazz standard today, including " In the Mood ". He also wrote Leap Frog for Les Brown .

He worked as a property manager in New York City in the 1950s , but led a big band in New Jersey in 1959 that included June Coles and Louis Metcalf .
