Edgar Hayes
Edgar Junius Hayes (* 23. May 1904 in Lexington , Kentucky ; † 28. June 1979 in San Bernardino in California ) was an American jazz - pianist and bandleader.
Life
Edgar Hayes studied at Fisk and Wilberforce University and played with the Mills Blue Rhythm Band from 1931 to 1936 . From 1937 to 1940 he led his own swing formation, with which he toured Europe in 1938. His musicians included u. a. Earl Bostic , Kenny Clarke , Curtis Counce , Buddy Collette , Teddy Bunn , Buster Bailey , Jimmy Archey, and David "Jelly" James . In 1938 Dizzy Gillespie played briefly in the Hayes Orchestra. In 1949, he hit the R&B charts with Fat Meat'n'Greens.In later years, Edgar Hayes played in clubs in California until the 1970s.
