Tavares (band)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tavares (also known as The Tavares Brothers ) is a Grammy- winning American soul , disco , and R&B band that enjoyed their greatest success in the 1970s. Between 1973 and 1983 the group achieved a total of 27 hits in the American R&B charts. She's Gone (1974), It Only Takes a Minute (1975), Whodunit (1977) were number one. Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel and More Than a Woman (1976) were other major international hits from Tavares.

Members

The band originally consisted of the five brothers

  • Ralph - Ralph Viera Tavares (born December 10, 1942)
  • Pooch - Arthur Paul Tavares (November 12, 1943)
  • Chubby - Antone Lee Tavares (born June 2, 1945)
  • Butch - Feliciano Tavares (born May 18, 1948)
  • Tiny - Perry Lee Tavares (born October 23, 1949)

history

Originally the Tavares come from Cape Verde . The brothers first appeared in 1963 under the name Chubby and the Turnpikes . Ten years later, in 1973, they signed a recording deal with Capitol Records and had their first hit with Check It Out . Another brother, John Tavares, left the group after the first album, which was constantly on the charts. 1975 was the most successful year for Tavares, the album In the City reached the top 40 of the US pop charts, the single It Only Takes a Minute reached number ten on the pop and number one on the R&B charts. Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel (1976) was a million seller and their first major international hit (including number four in Great Britain, number 38 in Germany and their only number one in the American disco charts). Remember What I Told You to Forget (1975), Don't Take Away the Music (1976), Whodunit (1977) and The Ghost of Love (1977) were other successful hits of the group, which are increasingly in the disco style of the time Time presented.

So Tavares contributed a hit to one of the most successful albums of all time, the soundtrack to the disco drama Saturday Night Fever . Their version of the Bee Gees song More Than a Woman reached number 32 on the US pop charts and number 7 in the UK and the group received their only Grammy for it .

Later albums were less successful, but continued to hit the R&B charts with top 10 hits like Never Had a Love Like This Before (1978/9), Bad Times (1980) and Deeper in Love (1983). A Penny for Your Thoughts in 1982 was the last top 40 hit in the US pop charts. It was also the first single after moving from Capitol to RCA . Here they only released two albums. After that, Tavares singles appeared from time to time, but the band's heyday was over for good.

In Great Britain, where the band had eight hits by 1978, Ben Liebrand remixes of Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel and It Only Takes a Minute hit the charts in 1986 . In 1992, Take That covered the latter title and thus had their first Top 10 success in the UK. A year later, Capitol's interest reawakened and released the CD The Best of Tavares .

Victor Tavares had already left the group in 1973 after the first record success. He released an unsuccessful solo LP called Victor Tavares for Polydor in 1981 . In 1983 Ralph Tavares left the band and became a court clerk, but began performing again with his brothers in 2014. In the mid-1990s, Perry Lee "Tiny" Tavares temporarily left the group, but has been back since 2009.

In 2014 the group was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame. Tavares continues as a quartet and still performs live.
