Barry Gibb
Sir Barry Alan Crompton Gibb CBE (born September 1, 1946 in Douglas , Isle of Man ) is a British-Australian composer and music producer . He is a former singer and guitarist for the Bee Gees music group .
Life
The Gibb family is from the Isle of Man . Barry's mother was a singer, while the father led a small orchestra. The family first moved to Manchester and then emigrated to Australia near Brisbane . It was there that Barry Gibb founded the Bee Gees in 1958 together with his brothers, the twins Robin and Maurice . In the mid-1960s, the family moved back to Great Britain, as they hoped there would be greater opportunities for their musical career. While they were still on the departing ship for Great Britain, they were informed that they had achieved number one placement in Australia with Spicks and Specks .
As a member of the Bee Gees, Barry played guitar and was the lead singer in most of the group's hits. But he was also active outside the band. He wrote and produced very successfully albums for superstars such as Barbra Streisand ( Guilty - 1980 and Guilty Pleasures - 2005). He also worked as a duet partner with other artists, for example for the title track of the album by Dionne Warwick Heartbreaker (1982), Diana Ross Eaten Alive (1985), with the chart topper Chain Reaction , Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers Islands in the Stream (1983) and Celine Dion Immortality (1997). The high falsetto voice has been characteristic of his singing style since the late 1970s .
Barry Gibb produced all of his youngest brother Andy Gibb's albums and was responsible as producer for a total of 16 number one hits by Bee Gees and other artists, including the performers Barbra Streisand (Woman in Love) , Frankie Valli (Grease) , Kenny Rogers , Dolly Parton ( Islands in the Stream ) and Diana Ross (Chain Reaction) . This makes Barry Gibb the third most successful British record producer. He has produced most of the UK's number one hits. The song Morning of My Life , written by the Bee Gees, became the biggest hit of the duo Esther & Abi Ofarim in Germany in 1967 .
Barry Gibb has released three solo albums, Now Voyager (1984), the score for Hawks (1988), a film starring Timothy Dalton , and In the Now (2016). His 1970 album project The Kid's No Good was never released.
Gibb has been married to Linda Ann Gray since 1970 and they have five children. His son Steve played with the sludge band Crowbar and bass with Black Label Society .
In January 2006, Gibb bought the house where Johnny Cash and his wife June Carter Cash had lived and worked for 35 years. The family wanted to use the house in Hendersonville , near Nashville , as a summer home. While it was still being restored, the house burned down completely on April 10, 2007 (the circumstances were never clarified).
Barry Gibb has lived in Miami Beach for around 30 years .
Honors
- In 1994 he, Robin and Maurice were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame , and in 1997 also into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .
- 2001 him and his brothers Maurice and Robin were the stage of a Commander of the British Order of Merit Order of the British Empire awarded.
- In 2004 he and his brother Robin received an honorary doctorate from the University of Manchester.
- At the end of 2017 he was raised to the knighthood ( Knight Bachelor ) by the Queen and is therefore allowed to bear the title of Sir. The accolade came from Prince Charles on June 26, 2018.
