production

In 1976 RSO Records entered into a joint venture with PolyGram , which guaranteed the label worldwide distribution. In addition, PolyGram participated in RSO Records. This ended the collaboration with Atlantic Records in North America , which had existed since 1967. However, this led to the fact that Atlantic house producer Arif Mardin was no longer available for a renewed collaboration with the Bee Gees. When looking for a new producer, the first choice fell on Richard Perry , who had previously worked with musicians such as Harry Nilsson , Barbra Streisand , Carly Simon and Ringo Starr . But when they couldn't get together, the band decided to take over the post themselves. In the lead was Barry Gibb , who brought Karl Richardson , who was already involved in the work on "Main Course" , and - on Richardson's recommendation - Albhy Galuten at his side. Galuten had previously worked as a musician but primarily as a sound engineer for Atlantic Records and worked for Derek and the Dominos and the Allman Brothers , for example . That was the starting signal for a production team that would work together very successfully until the 1980s.

In January 1976, the recordings for the album began in the Criteria Studios in Miami, where the later singles "You Should Be Dancing" and "Love So Right" were recorded. In February Stephen Stills and his band were busy recording the album Long May You Run for the Stills-Young Band in a neighboring studio . This led to Stills, George Perry and Joe Lala being featured on "Children of the World".

For the first time, the Bee Gees worked with the Dr. John initiated Boneroo Horns together.

Due to tax regulations for foreigners, however, the Bee Gees had to stop working in the USA on April 1st. They moved to Quebec , Canada , where they finished recording at Le Studio in May.

"Children of the World" was the first Bee Gees album since 1967 that did not use strings. Blue Weaver took over the corresponding parts on the synthesizer .

All compositions are from 1976.

reception

"Children of the World" continued the Bee Gees' trend of selling their albums much better in the US than in Europe. The album did not sell much better in Germany and England than its predecessor »Main Course«. Supported by an extensive tour through the USA , however, it was able to reach number 8 on the Billboard album charts.

"Love Me" was a hit in 1977 for Yvonne Elliman , who recorded the song for her album of the same name and also released it as a single. Gladys Knight adapted "The Way it Was" in 1978 for her album "Miss Gladys Knight". "You Should Be Dancing" has been reinterpreted many times since 1976, especially by artists from the dance-pop field . Jazz pianist Lionel Hampton recorded the song for his album "Saturday Night Jazz Fever", which contains exclusively Gibb compositions. There were other versions of The Beautiful South , The 2 Live Crew and Marcia Hines . "Subway" was released in 1977 by Samona Cooke , the daughter of Sam Cooke . That same year, Blonde On Blonde also had a small hit called it.

Trivia

Since the Bee Gees songs intended for the soundtrack were not yet available during the shooting of the film Saturday Night Fever , John Travolta dances to “You Should Be Dancing” in the film, which is why the title can also be found on the soundtrack album of the same name .
