Living Eyes is the Bee Gees' 16th studio album and the 14th internationally released. It was released on RSO Records in October 1981 .

music

With this album, the Bee Gees turned away from the disco sound, which was in the foreground in their work in the mid to late 1970s. The album was not a major commercial success, however, partly because the group had previously been so strongly associated with disco.

Emergence

After the great success of the production of Barbra Streisand's album Guilty , in which Barry Gibb was involved with Albhy Galuten and Karl Richardson , the Bee Gees found themselves in the Middle-Ear Studios in Miami in October 1980 to record their next album. They started working on some songs that were later released on Living Eyes . They were supported by Blue Weaver (keyboards, synthesizers, programming), Alan Kendall (lead guitar) and Dennis Bryon (drums, percussion), but the sessions were unsuccessful and the collaboration with the three musicians was ended.

The recordings thus began in early 1981 without the Bee Gees band, who recorded and toured with the group in the late 1970s. Barry Gibb assumed that he could create the sound he wanted with session musicians instead of a band. The album featured musicians such as Don Felder , Jeff Porcaro , Richard Tee , George Terry and Steve Gadd . Also, the Bee Gees said they wanted to try and get out of the disco act, which is why the album contained very little falsetto vocals (which by then had become a trademark of Bee Gees), with the exception of that Songs Soldiers .

Barry Gibb had developed his own style of production together with the producers Galuten and Richardson. But Robin and Maurice Gibb had gotten back to the studio and contributed more to the vocals and production, which created tension between them and the Gibb-Galuten-Richardson production team. Galuten later said he didn't enjoy the recordings and had considered leaving the team.

reception

Living Eyes sold about 1,250,000 copies worldwide, which was significantly less than before, compared to an estimated 20 to 30 million copies of their previous 1979 studio album Spirits Having Flown, although it is not doing well in the UK or the US sold, the album was a top 40 hit in most countries. It reached number 41 in the USA, number 73 in Great Britain, and number 37 in Germany . It was more successful in Italy with number eight, Spain with number four and Norway with number six.
