George Terry (born 1950 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American rock musician .

Career

Terry began his career as a studio musician in the late 1960s . He initially played for the relatively unknown band Game and the blues musician Barry Goldberg . In 1974 he worked for Bill Wyman and Freddie King on guitar; in the same year began his long-term collaboration with Eric Clapton . The two became friends and he became a permanent member of Clapton's live band for the following years and took over part of the lead guitar when Clapton withdrew from the spotlight. Terry worked as an instrumentalist and composer on his second solo album, 461 Ocean Boulevard . He played guitar and piano on the album , took over backing vocals and composed the track Mainline Florida , with which the album ended. Ken Emergon of Rolling Stone noted that Clapton was in the background on the album and Terry's rhythm guitar was in the foreground instead . Terry also introduced Clapton to the music of Bob Marley for the first time , which at the time was still unknown to the general public in the United States. The Bob Marley cover I Shot the Sheriff included on the album reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 14, 1974 , making it Clapton's most successful single in the United States .

On the album There's One in Every Crowd , released the following year , he wrote the reggae song Don't Blame Me with Clapton , while Clapton's fourth solo album, No Reason to Cry, contained none of his compositions. Terry was also on the 1975 live album E. C. Was Here to hear and was described in the Rolling Stone Review as an extremely competent guitarist. Terry had his greatest commercial success with the country rock song Lay Down Sally , which he co-wrote with Clapton and Marcella Detroit for the album Slowhand . The single sold more than 1,000,000 times worldwide. His collaboration with Clapton ended with the 1978 album Backless , Dave Marsh of Rolling Stone highlighted the use of Terry's slide guitar in his album review . Terry then returned to Florida and worked as a studio musician for ABBA , Diana Ross , Dionne Warwick , Bee Gees and Barbra Streisand . On April 15, 1985 he appeared at Clapton's concert in Lakeland, Florida as a special guest and played the blue song Further On Up the Road with the band . In 2004 he released his only solo album to date, Guitar Drive .
