Sigrid Artmann (2018)
Sigrid Artmann (2018)

Sigrid Artmann (born September 20, 1966 in Mühldorf am Inn in Upper Bavaria ) is a German artist, calligrapher, author and lecturer.

Life

From 1981 to 1984 Artmann trained as an industrial clerk in Upper Bavaria. Until 1998 she worked as a commercial clerk with a focus on sales and experienced her first managerial responsibility as a team leader in sales. In 1998 she moved to Ludwigsburg and from 1998 to 2011 worked as a key account manager in various companies in sales with national and international travel activities. In 1999 Sigrid Artmann met her future husband Alexander Friederich, whom she married in 2005.

After autodidactic occupation with calligraphy followed from 2004 an apprenticeship with a calligraphy correspondence course with Alexandra Remmes as well as further education with artists like Gottfried Pott and Hans Maierhofer . The calligraphers Yves Leterme and Brody Neuenschwander (Belgium) and Torsten Kolle (Germany) had the greatest influence on their later artistic developments.

Her first exhibition "Opium slumber and champagne rush" took place in 2009 on the occasion of the Schiller Year in Marbach am Neckar town hall . In the same year she founded the group "Type Artists of Baden-Württemberg" (SKBW). Regular meetings, the organization of workshops, excursions and networking among calligraphers was the goal. In 2015 she handed the organization over to Jacqueline Hester. From 2009 to 2015 she held the position of the deputy board member at ARS SCRIBENDI eV.

Since 2011 she took the step into freelance artistic activity, which resulted in close collaboration with her husband, a trained restorer, who from then on made the frames for her works.

In 2013 Artmann founded the NEO3 group with the calligraphers Ute Kreuzer and Andrea Wunderlich. Artmann finally came to the Künstlerhaus Stuttgar t through the artist Angelika Flaig in 2014 . There the collaboration with Dr. Gwendolyn Isabel Rabenstein and Sibylle Möndel and artistic screen printing found their way into Artmann's work. In 2017 Artmann became a founding member of the artists' collective Nachtschwestern. Besides her members are ASGARD († 2018) (accordion), Angela Mohr (author) and Isabel Eichenlaub (cellist).

Artmann has an unconventional approach to font, letter and color. Her early work is characterized by bright colors, provocative words and a striking design language with strong contrasts. Your engagement with words is a reaction to the rapid development of the media and their importance on the thinking and acting of this time. “The Power of Words” is a cycle of works from 2016–2018.

In the course of the debates about people seeking asylum in Europe, Artmann planned her first art performance in 2015 with the title “no voice - letters act”. This was supposed to take place in the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart , but was rejected by the curators there. Artmann then put this performance into practice in front of the Baden-Württemberg State Parliament without authorization . With MANIFESTO 2016 , her performances became known to an international audience. “Ludwigsburg Monument” followed in 2016. For the first time, experiments with champagne chalk were carried out in public spaces by applying text to large areas on sidewalks.

In 2019 Artmann developed the genre of ritual art with "QUERIDA MADRE" in Lanzarote . Ritual art is a formal, solemn and festive act with a high symbolic content that proceeds according to given rules. It is accompanied by certain word formulas and defined gestures. An elaborate ceremony accompanies the preparation, implementation and the final act of the installation. The goal is not the finished work of art, but rather the repetitive performal act. This event is transformed into a routine, recurring process. In 2019 Artmann visited Fabienne Verdier's exhibition in Aix en Provence , whose large-format works inspired her to work on a larger scale. For the implementation of these new large-format works, Artmann rented a joint studio in Gerlingen in March 2020 , where the works for the “BEYOND WORDS” cycle were created.

Logo design

Based on her skills, Sigrid Artmann developed word and figurative marks for numerous institutions, companies and public figures, including the ice hockey player Christoph Ullmann .

Development of own fonts

Artmann taught calligraphy in connection with contemporary art at art academies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. She realized that an intensive study of historical scripts did not fit into the concept of adult education and thereupon developed her own modern scripts, "Bold Beauty" and a little later "Bold Elegant", which she taught from then on at art academies.
