Alexandra Remmes

Alexandra Remmes (born August 10, 1946 ; † May 25, 2015 ) was a German type artist, illuminator and painter.

Life

childhood

Alexandra Remmes was born in Düsseldorf as the child of the graphic designer, calligrapher and painter Leo Nix and the ceramic artist Elisabeth Nix .

Work in advertising

After studying graphic design at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences with a final exam as a graduate designer, she first worked as a layouter, illustrator and art director in various Düsseldorf advertising agencies until her talent in the areas of brainstorming, conception and text was discovered. During her creative career, she switched from graphic design to conception and text and looked after clients such as Kaufhof AG, Henkel AG, Procter & Gamble, 3M, MMD, Organon, Boehringer and many more, initially in large advertising agencies and later as a freelance lancer in the same creative areas.

Independent artist

In 1997 she switched from advertising to a purely artistic field and founded her Scriptorium Düsseldorf, studio and school for calligraphy. Since then she has worked as a calligrapher and type artist as well as an illuminator. Her artistic fields of activity included commercial and private commissioned work as well as an extensive range of courses as a lecturer. Her individual calligraphy courses, seminars and correspondence courses were in demand nationally and internationally. Her students included type enthusiasts from all areas of Germany, other European countries, the USA and Japan. She maintained a permanent exhibition in her studio.

Jewelry edition The Lord of the Rings

Alexandra Remmes became internationally known for the idea and design of the jewelry edition The Lord of the Rings for the Klett-Cotta publishing house in the style of early medieval insular illumination. For the first time, the work of the contemporary author JRR Tolkien was designed in the style of the 9th century through them .

Volunteering

Alexandra Remmes has been an active member and board member of the Ars Scribendi association since 1998, and was chairman from 2006 to 2009. She also volunteered for Ars Scribendi, the International Society for the Promotion of Literature and Writing, as editor of the Ars Scribendi magazine until 2012. Since then, Alexandra Remmes has been one of the few successful type artists in Germany who have given calligraphy - beautiful script - a new meaning.
