Spicks and Specks is the second music album of the Bee Gees , in 1966 Australia published.

production

At the beginning of 1966, the Bee Gees had a new record deal with Spin Records , producer Nat Kipner's label. Kipner sent the brothers to his friend Ossie Byrne, who ran the St. Clair Studio in Hurstville . Byrne had a good reputation for his always artist-oriented work. The Gibb brothers took the opportunity to develop as a band there. But each and every one of the brothers should discover their own special skills and learn to implement them within the band.

Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb took the chance and composed more than ever before, especially as Robin and Maurice Gibb took part in the creative process for the first time. Maurice Gibb wrote songs together with Nat Kipner for April Byron, Barrington Davis and The Mystics, most of which were recorded on the spot and also released as singles. During these weeks in the summer of 1966, the Bee Gees themselves recorded material for several albums, including backing tracks for various songs that were later released by Ronnie Burns.

After the single "Monday's Rain" released in the summer of 1966 went unnoticed, the follow-up single "Spicks and Specks" made it to the top of several regional charts, which also made the album the first album top seller for the Bee Gees in Australia.

The album was released outside Australia in 1968 under the title "Rare, Precious & Beautiful Vol. 1" (in Germany on the DGG sub-label Karussell ). From the late 1970s onwards, this material was re-released on countless cheap labels, initially as LP, and later also in CD format.

In 2013 the Australian 3CD box “The Festival Album Collection 1965-67” was released, within which the album - including the original artwork - was re-released for the first time in 47 years.

Trivia

The album was originally supposed to be released under the title "Monday's Rain" without the song "Spicks and Specks". However, when the single sold well, the song "All Of My Life" was deleted from the album, replaced by "Spicks and Specks" and the title of the album was changed. Whether the album with the planned title »Monday's Rain« was actually released is controversial among fans.
