The Allman Brothers Band was a rock band from Macon , Georgia , in the south of the United States . They were the first and also one of the most important bands of Southern Rock and had their greatest success in the early 1970s.

history

Founded in 1969, the band originally consisted of Duane Allman ( guitar ), Gregg Allman (vocals, keyboards ), Dickey Betts (guitar), Berry Oakley ( bass ), Butch Trucks ( drums ) and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson (drums, percussion ). The actual Allman brothers, Duane and Gregg, previously played in various groups, including the Escorts , the Allman Joys and, most recently, Hour Glass . When Hour Glass lost their recording deal, Duane formed the Allman Brothers Band.

In 1969 they released their critically acclaimed but neglected first album, The Allman Brothers Band . The second album Idlewild South (1970) was already a respectable success. The third album At Fillmore East (1971) brought the final breakthrough. A little later, Duane Allman died as a result of a motorcycle accident.

The band finished the album Eat a Peach, begun with Duane . Chuck Leavell ( piano ) was accepted into the band. After the publication of Eat a Peach , Berry Oakley also died in a motorcycle accident not far from where Duane was killed.

Lamar Williams replaced Oakley. The next album, Brothers and Sisters , was released in 1973. It contained the band's most famous hits today, Ramblin 'Man and the instrumental piece Jessica .

Due to personal differences, the band drifted apart. Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts started solo careers. Gregg married Cher . Substance abuse has taken its toll. In 1975 the album Win, Lose or Draw was created , in the same year the compilation album The Road Goes On Forever was released. The band ended in May 1976 after Gregg Allman testified in a drug trial against a band member. Leavell, Johanson, and Williams formed Sea Level while Betts was working on his solo career. With Wipe the Windows, Check the Oil, Dollar Gas a live album was released, which also brought previously unpublished material.

In 1978 the band reunited without Chuck Leavell and Lamar Williams, but with Dan Toler (guitar) as a new member. In 1979 the album Enlightened Rogues came out. But in 1982 the group broke up again.

It wasn't until 1989 that success came back with the reform of the band and with Seven Turns , the first studio album in nine years. Since then, Warren Haynes has been the group's guitarist; he was introduced by Dickey Betts and had previously been a member of his Dickey Betts band.

In 1995 the Allman Brothers Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .

In 2000 the group split from founding member Dickey Betts. Since that time Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes, who was not part of the band for a short time, have been the two guitarists of the group. This formation with Gregg Allman, Butch Trucks, Jaimoe, Marc Quinones, Oteil Burbridge, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes became one of the most stable and enduring in the entire history of the band.

In January 2014, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes decided that they would both leave the band later in the year to put more time and energy into their own groups. Gregg Allman then announced that the Allman Brothers Band was over and that he would also pursue his solo project Gregg Allman and Friends .

Butch Trucks and Gregg Allman - who were the only members of all of the band's lineups - died a few months apart in 2017.

Remarks

On the LP / CD "Brothers and Sisters", Les Dudek was the second guitarist alongside Dickey Betts . He was also present at a few live performances that ran after the record was released. Les Dudek brought out some records himself, including a. Ghost Town Parade . His guitar playing came very close to Duane Allman's.

Probably the best-known piece by the Allman Brothers, the instrumental piece Jessica , was the theme tune of the BR rock music broadcasts on Zündfunk ( Club 16 , Zündfunk Club ) in the 1970s and early 1980s . The WDR also used it several times as background music and signature melody, e.g. B. for the radio programs Sounds and Schüler make program , both in the 1970s on WDR 2 . The British TV show Top Gear of the BBC has been opening since 2002 , but this is not the original version of the Allman Brothers, but a greatly shortened interpretation of around 20 seconds in length. The piece is played at the beginning of each episode to accompany the opening credits. In the 11th episode of the 6th season, one of the presenters ( James May ) tried to reproduce the Top Gear Tune using engine noises from different engines at different speeds.
