Originally released as a double LP, The Road Goes On Forever contains songs from previously released albums The Allman Brothers Band , Idlewild South , At Fillmore East , Eat a Peach and Brothers and Sisters . The live version of One Way Out has not yet been released. The Expanded Edition released by Mercury Records in 2001 also contains songs by Win, Lose or Draw , Wipe the Windows, Check the Oil, Dollar Gas and Enlightened Rogues, which was created after the band's first reunion .

Music journalist Robert Christgau wrote that if you only needed one album by the band, this would be the right choice. He rated the recordings with an A-.
