Originally released as a double LP, The Road Goes On Forever contains songs from previously released albums The Allman Brothers Band , Idlewild South , At Fillmore East , Eat a Peach and Brothers and Sisters . The live version of One Way Out has not yet been released. The Expanded Edition released by Mercury Records in 2001 also contains songs by Win, Lose or Draw , Wipe the Windows, Check the Oil, Dollar Gas and Enlightened Rogues, which was created after the band's first reunion .

Thomas Erlewine wrote on Allmusic that the album would be an excellent choice for fans who wanted a comprehensive collection. It got four and a half stars out of five. Music journalist Robert Christgau wrote that if you only needed one album by the band, this would be the right choice. He rated the recordings with an A-.
