Robert Christgau (born April 18, 1942 ) is an American essayist and music journalist . Christgau is one of the first professional rock music - critic and known for its short, concise reviews. He referred to himself as the "Dean of American Rock Critics" (" Doyen of American rock critics").

Life

Robert Christgau grew up in New York City and became a rock 'n' roll fan. He attended Dartmouth College and graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. He also took up jazz during college but returned to rock after graduation.

He first wrote short stories , then became a sports writer and reporter for the Newark Star-Ledger . In 1967 he took over the music column in Esquire magazine . Christgaus reviews were then since 1969 in its Consumer Guide (about: Consumer notes ) published u. a. in The Village Voice . He was also the editor of The Village Voice for 37 years . He also published the annual Pazz & Jop survey.

From 1972 he worked full time as a music critic for Newsday , before returning to The Village Voice in 1974 as chief music officer . He stayed there until August 2006 when he was fired after New Times Media took over the paper . Two months later he moved to Rolling Stone , where he was also fired at the end of 2007, although he continued to work for three months. From the March 2008 issue he worked for Blender magazine until it ceased publication in March 2009. In addition, Christgau occasionally wrote for Playboy , Spin magazine and Creem magazine .

Robert Christgau taught at the California Institute of the Arts during its founding years . In 2005 he was an assistant professor in the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music at New York University .

Consumer Guide

Christgau's columns have been published in The Village Voice since 1969 under the title Consumer Guide , and for a short time also in Newsday . The reviews were about 18 to 20 lines long. Christgau awarded school grades from A + (1+) to E-. In 1990 he changed the format, there have now been six to eight reviews of Upper-B + or higher rated albums out. There was a Dud of the Month ( rivets of the month ), the B or less got and three lists: Honorable Mention ( honorable mention ) (B + -albums that no full review received), Choice Cuts ( special items ) (excellent songs on not recommended albums) and rivets.
