General

The song was Willie Dixon's first successful song. He himself said that before that he wasn't particularly well known as a songwriter, although he had already written many. After Hoochie Coochie Man, Leonard Chess wanted more songs like that. The song peaked at number 8 on the Billboard R&B chart .

The Rolling Stone named it to the list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and in 1984 the song was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Blues Foundation . In 1998, she was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

There are different opinions about the meaning of the word " Hoochie Coochie " in the text. The word could refer to the dance that emerged in the USA around 1870 and was a forerunner of the striptease. Others believe that “coochie” refers to the woman's vagina and that “hoochie” is a slang term for illegal alcohol, so “hoochie coochie” refers to nothing more than the enjoyment of sex and alcohol. The text leaves open which version is the right one.
