Black Stone Cherry is an American Southern rock - band from Edmonton in the state of Kentucky . The band was formed in 2001 and took its name from a cheap cigarette brand popular in the United States . Black Stone Cherry are signed to Roadrunner Records and have released six studio albums to date.
Band history
Foundation and first album (2001 to 2007)
Singer and guitarist Chris Robertson and bassist Jon Lawhon met during their high school years . The musicians spent their free time with jam sessions , some of which were even attended by their school director . A little later, guitarist Ben Wells and drummer John Fred Young, son of Kentucky headhunters guitarist Richard Young, completed the band. The rehearsals took place in an old, unheated barn where the Kentucky headhunters, among others, had been rehearsing since the 1960s.
In 2006, the self-titled debut album was released via Roadrunner Records and rose to number 90 on the US album charts . Black Stone Cherry was produced by John Fred Young's father and Kevin Shirley , who already with bands like Aerosmith or Iron Maiden , has worked mixed . In the US alone, the album sold over 160,000 times.
The band played in North America in the opening act of Black Label Society and in Europe as the opening act of Whitesnake and Def Leppard . As part of this European tour, the appearance in the London Astoria was published as a double live album , on which, in addition to his own compositions, various cover versions , e.g. B. Hoochie Coochie Man by Muddy Waters or Voodoo Child by Jimi Hendrix .
Folklore and Superstition and Between the Devil & the Deep Blue Sea (since 2008)
On August 19, 2008, the second studio album Folklore and Superstition (German: Folklore and Superstition ) was released. The album made it to number 28 in the US and number 23 in the UK charts. In Germany , too , the band was able to achieve a chart position for the first time with position 54. The album Folklore and Superstition , recorded in Nashville , was produced by Bob Marlette . Many songs address the folklore of the American southern states . Black Stone Cherry play several tours supporting Seether , Theory of a Deadman and Nickelback .
After the band started preparing for their third album at the end of 2009, there were repeated delays due to further tours, including with Motörhead . Between the Devil & the Deep Blue Sea was finally released on May 31, 2011 in the USA. The album produced by Howard Benson reached number 13 in the British and number 22 in the German album charts. After a US tour with Alter Bridge , the band performed in summer 2011, as in 2009, at the German festivals Rock am Ring and Rock im Park .
Magic Mountain , Kentucky and Family Tree (since 2014)
On May 5, 2014, the fourth studio album Magic Mountain was released via Roadrunner Records and immediately hit number 5 in the UK album charts. From this album the singles Me and Mary Jane and Remember Me were released. With this album, the band also went on an extensive world tour, including Theory of a Deadman as a support act. A live DVD titled Thank You: Livin 'Live was released on October 30, 2015 . This contains a recording of the concert in Birmingham exactly one year earlier. A few days earlier, work on the fifth, as yet unnamed studio album was announced. For this, the band left their label Roadrunner Records and switched to Mascot Records , with which Volbeat are also under contract. The band announced a return to their roots, so the album was also produced in the same location as the debut album, namely in Glasgow, Kentucky. In December the name Kentucky was announced for the fifth album. The band released their fifth studio album, Kentucky , on April 1, 2016 . Before that, however, the band went on a stadium tour of Great Britain in January and February 2016 as part of the Carnival of Madness with the bands Highly Suspect , Halestorm and Shinedown . A European tour has also been announced, initially with Theory of a Deadman as the opening act. The last concerts, however, were performed with the British band Toseland . Her sixth album Family Tree will be released on April 20, 2018 .
Music genre
While the debut album was even more oriented towards hard and southern rock , influences from other styles of music can also be heard on Folklore and Superstition . According to their own statements, u. a. Influences from classic rock , blues , Motown , country , soul and rhythm and blues , but also elements from jazz or reggae and from the bluegrass music common in the southern states . In fact, a clear categorization is hardly possible, but a classification in the area of Southern or Hard Rock is obvious. Black Stone Cherry is therefore often compared to Lynyrd Skynyrd , the Black Crowes and Led Zeppelin because of their musical style, as well as to AC / DC or Guns N 'Roses because of their special and hard musical character .
While the band had processed true stories in their lyrics on their first two albums, the lyrics on Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea turned to the feelings and impressions of events that a person encounters every day. The band has an open attitude towards religion, which is mainly due to the band's origins in the so-called Bible Belt .
