Black Label Society is an American heavy metal - band , for a major Zakk Wylde , guitarist of Ozzy Osbourne , is responsible.
Band history
After Osbourne had produced the album Ozzmosis together with Wylde in 1995 , Osbourne decided in the late 1990s to take a probably longer break. This gave Zakk Wylde the opportunity to devote himself to his musical side projects Pride and Glory and Zakk Wylde's Book of Shadows . In 1998 he founded the formation "Hell's Kitchen" and began with the drummer Phil Ondich and the producers Ron and Howard Albert with the production of an album called Sonic Brew . He also brought parts of song material that he had previously recorded in a session with Guns N 'Roses . After the artwork and the songs had been produced for the album , it turned out that the project name "Hell's Kitchen" could not be legally secured. Wylde and Ondich then changed it to "" Black Label Society "". The name comes from their predilection for whiskey . Nick Catanese joined the band as the second guitarist.
A year after the album was released in Japan (1998), it was reissued in a remix version for the American and European markets . A worldwide tour was planned for which John DeServio was hired as bassist . As a four-piece band, they performed in Japan, Europe and North America. The American tour had to be postponed because the Johnnie Walker company sued the band. The company claimed that the cover of their debut album featured a bottle of their brand of whiskey without their consent. Black Label Society decided to take the album off the market and re-release it with new artwork. No More Tears was recorded as a bonus track in 2000 together with Mike Inez .
In 2000, Wylde and Ondich recorded the album Stronger Than Death . John DeServio no longer took over the bass, Steve Gibb (the son of Barry Gibb ) was hired for the tour . The opening act played Crowbar and Sixty Watt Shaman . The tour was fraught with problems, for example drummer Ondich collapsed due to jet lag at a show in Anaheim , California , which was to mark the start of their US tour. During the tour, Wylde also lost one of his Gibson Les Paul guitars, which reappeared in a pawn shop in 2004 .
On July 6, 2000, during the band's performance in Highland, Indiana, after three songs, an argument broke out between the still unrecovered Ondich and Wylde. Then Ondich left the band. Crowbar's Craig Nunenmacher took on the drums for the rest of the tour and stayed with the band in the future. From September 27, 2000 all shows had to be canceled because the record company got into financial difficulties and was no longer solvent.
In 2001 the formation's first live album, Alcohol Fueled Brewtality Live +5 , was released, as was the album 1919 Eternal , which was produced in collaboration with Wylde and Nunenmacher. Christian Werr can be heard as a guest drummer. In 2001 and 2002 Black Label Society played on the Ozzfest tour, with Robert Trujillo playing the bass parts in 2002 .
In 2003 the album The Blessed Hellride was released, on which Ozzy Osbourne can be heard as a guest singer. For the first single, a video was produced under the direction of Rob Zombie . The following tour was done again with Mike Inez.
The 2004 album Hangover Music Vol. VI reached the US Billboard charts at # 40 after the previous album had already been listed in the Top 50. With James LoMenzo a permanent bass player was found who supported the band at the live shows.
Mafia appeared in 2004 and made it into the top 20 of the American charts. In 2005 a best of album was released. After a two-year waiting period, Shot to Hell was released in 2006 .
The album Skullage was released in 2009, a best-of, which contains 12 tracks from the albums from Pride & Glory to Shot To Hell as well as 4 live tracks from an acoustic session in Leigh Valley. A DVD release of the same name was also produced for Skullage . It contains videos of the band as well as live concert recordings and also the Leigh Valley acoustic session .
In 2010 the band released the single Parade of the Dead as well as another new single in the US entitled Crazy Horse . Both songs come from the album Order of the Black , which was released on August 10, 2010.
In 2014 Nick Catanese left the band and was replaced by Lizzy Borden - guitarist Dario Lorina. The album Catacombs of the Black Vatican was released on April 7, 2014.
style
The music of the Black Label Society is characterized by rolling guitar riffs combined with pinch harmonics , fast-playing solos and calm piano passages. Just like the bass, the drums play a more percussive role, as the rhythm is often simply kept in 4/4 time. The guitars are usually tuned lower, up to four semitones below normal guitar tuning (from E to C). The lyrics often revolve around suffering, pain, grief or life. The music genre can be better described as Doom Metal with strong influences from Southern Rock. However, there are also country and blues elements to be found.
