Crowbar (English, Crowbar ') is a Sludge - band from New Orleans , Louisiana , USA , which is characterized mainly by a hard and slow sound, sometimes uptempo in the hardcore incorporated -Passagen.

Band history

Crowbar was founded in 1989 in New Orleans , Louisiana (NOLA) under the name The Slugs . The first album, Obedience Thru Suffering , was released on the Grind Core label in 1992 and also received initial attention in Europe. In the following years, Crowbar were pioneers of their style, also known as sludge, which combined extremely hard guitars with slow doom sounds, as they can also be heard on Candlemass . Soon Craig Nunenmacher (now with Black Label Society ) replaced Jimmy Bower on drums. The second guitarist alongside frontman Kirk Windstein, Kevin Noonan, who has only been with the band since 1992, was followed by Matt Thomas in 1993.

Obedience Thru Suffering still lacked the slightly greater accessibility that characterized the more melodic, self-titled album released in 1993, which was produced by singer Phil Anselmo (then especially Pantera ).

The second, self-titled, Crowbar album was advertised on the UK TV show MTV's Headbangers Ball . Phil Anselmo did the backing vocals on some of the tracks on this album . The video clips for the pieces All I Had (I Gave) and Existence is Punishment were received with interest by music journalists and fans, as was the Led Zeppelin cover song No Quarter . A tour with Pantera followed, u. a. through Europe, where Crowbar's stage presence, embodied by the heavy bass player Todd Strange ("Sexy T."), came into its own. In the spring of 1994 the band acted as support for Paradise Lost . The band later traveled with Napalm Death .

The third studio album, Time Heals Nothing (1995), was musically and compositionally linked to its predecessor. The title track as well as the fast The Only Factor , but also the brute and desperate Through a Wall of Tears are among the most direct and catchy pieces that Crowbar have released to date. In the same year, Pantera’s Phil Anselmo, Pepper Keenan ( Corrosion of Conformity ) and Jimmy Bower recorded their first Down album with Kirk Windstein and bassist Todd Strange .

Before the recordings of Broken Glass (1996), which was produced by Simon Efemey , there was another line-up change. Nunenmacher was replaced by the returning Jimmy Bower. Matt Thomas also left the band soon after, and was succeeded in 1998 by Acid Bath guitarist Sammy Pierre Duet. The album contains some comparatively fast passages, the songs seem a bit more bulky than with Time Heals Nothing . However, it has received praise from the trade press.

Odd Fellows Rest , published in 1998, starts with Planets Collide with a striking riff structure and a title track with an experimental, almost meditative character. For the first time, no music video for the record was released. In addition, Jimmy Bower left the band in the same year to devote himself, among other things, to EyeHateGod , for which he had also worked again and again in the meantime. The position of drummer was initially vacant, but was briefly filled with Sid Montz, who can be heard on Equilibrium , the returning Craig Nunenmacher and finally in 2001 with Tony Costanza. Equilibrium contains the Gary Wright -Cover Dreamweaver with To Touch the Hand of God , a piano-dominated piece.

With the departure of Todd Strange in 2000, who could only be replaced by Jeff Okoneski after some time, Windstein remained as the only founding member. Sonic Excess in its purest form is apostrophized as a "new beginning", but due to lack of great success it was the last record before Kirk Windstein Crowbar initially shelved in order to turn to the second album of the side project Down. Songs like The Lasting Dose and Thru The Ashes (I've Watched You Burn) are borrowed from the typical Crowbar sound of previous albums.

present

Todd Strange's departure cost the band some visual recognition value , but the music on the newer studio albums mostly remained true to the heavyweight riffs, even if the Crowbar - and Time Heals Nothing - era remained the band's most successful. From 2003 Windstein wrote new songs for Crowbar with ex-drummer Craig Nunenmacher. The search for a new label delayed the release of a new album.

Since 2005 the band consisted of members of the NOLA bands Goatwhore (Patrick Bruders on bass) and Soilent Green (Tommy Buckley on drums) as well as the son of Bee Gees guitarist Barry Gibb , Steve Gibb. The 2005 release Lifesblood for the Downtrodden featured Pantera bassist Rex Brown on bass and keyboards and was responsible for the production together with Down's producer Warren Riker .

After the twentieth anniversary of the band in 2009, the band toured in the summer of 2010 a. a. with Sepultura through Europe. A new album will be released on February 8, 2011 with Sever the Wicked Hand . Instead of Steve Gibb, Matthew Brunson, who plays bass in Windstein's side project Kingdom of Sorrow, has taken over the guitar.

After brother's left Crowbar at the end of 2013 to concentrate solely on his other band Down, a new bassist, Jeff Golden, joined Crowbar in 2014.

On June 5, 2016, Crowbar announced on their Facebook page that they had broken up with bassist Jeff Golden.

A day later, Todd "Sexy T" Strange was announced as the new bass player. So the current line-up was completed again by him as a returning founding member of the band. Strange left the band again a year later, according to his own statement, for family reasons. He was replaced by Shane Wesley shortly afterwards.
