Acid Bath was a sludge band from Louisiana , USA , that existed from 1991 to 1997.

Band history

The band was founded in 1991. The band or parts of it operated under the name Golgotha at that time. After the release of their first demo ("Hymns of the Needle Freak"), Acid Bath were signed by Rotten Records , Spike Cassidy's record company . The two albums “When the Kite String Pops” (1994) and “Paegan Terrorism Tactics” (1996) followed. A planned third album with the alleged title "Killer Rat Poison" was never completed. The reason for this was the sudden accidental death of their bass player Audie, whose car was rammed by a drunk. The resulting accident killed Audie and his parents; only his little brother Kelly survived. For Acid Bath, however, this meant the end, since the band could no longer function without Audie, who played a major role in the songwriting.

Sound, style and status of the band

The two albums, as Acid Bath's significant contributions to the music world, contain a unique version of the so-called NOLA sound, to which bands such as Crowbar , Down or EyeHateGod can also be attributed. The genre is also roughly referred to as sludge , sometimes the NOLA bands (NOLA stands for New Orleans , Louisiana ) are assigned to Doom Metal due to their severity and the sometimes overwhelming slowness . Acid Bath do not actually belong to any genre, on their albums you can find both ballads and fast pieces, which sometimes even break the boundaries of Death Metal . The band aroused interest, however, not only through their unusual music, but also through the lyrics that dealt with taboo topics such as rape and drug use and the cover design of the albums and radio edits. On the debut album z. B. a painting of serial killer John Wayne Gacy , the successor featured a picture of controversial euthanasia doctor Jack Kevorkian . During their lifetime, the band hardly got beyond their initial underground status, as Rotten Records was hardly up to the task of promoting Acid Bath appropriately. Outside the USA, the albums were difficult to obtain, and information about the band was rare. Today acid baths enjoy a form of cult status.

Projects and bands during and after Acid Bath

While the band was active, bassist Audie Pitre had a project called Shrum, in which his brother Kelly also played. This is an experimental band in which Audie dispensed with a classic rock line-up and explored new frequency ranges with two basses. Kelly Pitre currently plays with Sammy Duet in a band called Vual, but the latter found new musical homes at Goatwhore and Crowbar after the breakup of Acid Bath . Dax Riggs and Mike Sanchez stayed together under the Agents of Oblivion banner , but the band split up shortly after the album of the same name was released. After that, Riggs devoted himself mainly to his project Deadboy and the Elephantmen, which, however, could hardly be called a band due to the strong membership changes. Meanwhile, this band operates under Riggs' own name.
