In 1988 Windstein left the band and joined Shell Shock, a hardcore band from New Orleans , as a singer and guitarist . Guitarist Mike Hatch committed suicide while the band was recording an album called No Tomorrow . Kevin Noonan took his place some time later and after several line-up changes and renaming to Aftershock, WREQUIEM and The Slugs, Crowbar emerged from the band in 1991. Windstein had their first successes with Crowbar in the early to mid-1990s when the band's videos ran on MTV Headbangers Ball and they toured with Pantera and Paradise Lost .

In 1995 Windstein recorded the debut album NOLA of the band project Down, founded in 1991, as guitarist with Phil Anselmo from Pantera as well as Pepper Keenan ( Corrosion of Conformity ) and his Crowbar bandmate Jimmy Bower . Down also toured the United States, with Crowbar's Todd Strange playing bass. In 2002, Down reformed again and recorded a second album, Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow . The band also performed at the Ozzfest . The musicians then returned to their main bands. In 2007, however, the third Down album, Down III: Over the Under, followed . In 2013 he left Down to focus on his activities with Crowbar.

In between, Windstein played bass with Valume Nob , but withdrew from the band in 2006. In March 2010, it was reported that Windstein was engaged as a singer in a band project called Suicide War, which included former Valume Nob members, Craig Nunenmacher (ex-Crowbar, Black Label Society ) and Soilent Green and Goatwhore singer Ben Falgoust .

2005 founded Kirk Windstein with Hatebreed singer and MTV presenter Jamey Jasta Kingdom of Sorrow . With this band, Windstein released the self-titled debut in 2008, followed by the second album Behind the Blackest Tears in 2010 .
