(2002)

NOLA (English abbreviation for New Orleans , Louisiana ) is the debut album by the American band Down . It was published by Elektra / EastWest in September 1995 .

Origin and style

The album was written mainly by Pepper Keenan ( Corrosion of Conformity ) and Phil Anselmo from 1990-95 . In the early 1990s, three demos were initially released. Eventually the band was signed by Elektra after performing in their hometown. The album was created in the summer of 1994 in the Ultrasonic Studios in New Orleans. Contrary to the advance expectations of some who started out from the music of the bands of the four members, NOLA contains less hard metal elements, but is influenced by classic rock and bands like Black Sabbath .

reception

The album peaked at number 57 on the Billboard 200 . Allmusic's David Reamer called Down a supergroup that plays like one on NOLA . The album is a landmark that should be included in every metal music collection. It awarded 4.5 out of five stars and the “AMG Album Pick” award. Eike Schmitz from Powermetal.de wrote about NOLA that it was “a chunk of Southern Metal that sounds so tough and monumental, as if Satan had personally thrown up a lump of tar from which the band then formed a hearty piece of metal in the marsh fever of New Orleans, Louisiana Has."
