Lizzy Borden is an American rock band of heavy metal / "Horror Metal" from Los Angeles , has been particularly successful in the 1980s. The band attracted attention at the beginning of their career by a blood-drenched stage show. Whereas at the beginning the stage appearance was oriented towards glam rock , today Lizzy Borden appear in costumes reminiscent of zombies .

The band name

Lizzy Borden borrowed her band name from Lizzie Borden , an American woman who allegedly brutally murdered her parents with an ax on August 4, 1892. The case and the subsequent hearing caused an enormous national sensation. Lizzie Borden was acquitted on June 20, 1893.

style

The band name determined the program, especially in the early days. The Shock Rock Band puts on a bloody show live in Alice Cooper , Kiss or WASP fashion, in which an ax plays an important role. The band also alludes to the spectacular crime in their song titles, including on their debut EP Give 'Em The Ax . In contrast to the bands mentioned above, Lizzy Borden plays fast heavy metal with two-part guitar runs, which is often reminiscent of Iron Maiden . The high and clear voice of singer Lizzy is also characteristic of the style and at the same time a distinguishing feature of the band.

history

Beginnings

Lizzy Borden was founded in Los Angeles in April 1983 by singer Lizzy, his brother, drummer Joey Scott Harges, bassist Mike Kenny and guitarist Tony Matuzak. Their song Rod Of Iron appeared on the fourth part of the Metal Blade soundtrack series Metal Massacre , whereupon the label boss Brian Slagel offered them a record deal.

Successes and dissolution

One year after the band was founded, the first EP, Give 'Em The Ax , was released, which in addition to the spectacular show caused quite a stir and with Long Live Rock'n'Roll also contains a cover of the Rainbow song of the same name . Meanwhile, the new bassist Mike Davis and Gene Allen joined the line-up as the second guitarist, and Lizzy Borden played a number of concerts on the American west coast. In the summer of 1985, the first complete album Love You To Pieces was finally released , after which guitarist Tony Matuzak was replaced by Alex Nelson. On Friday, December 13, 1985, the band recorded a live album and video at the Country Club in Reseda, California. The Murderess Metal Road Show was released in 1986, the video has also been available on DVD since 2002 . This also includes the Paul McCartney cover Live And Let Die .

The following studio album Menace To Society was released in the same year and reached number 195 in the American album charts. The album title (in German Danger for Society ) was the band's answer to the controversial discussions that were held because of the lurid stage show. However, with the release of the album, the band shed their bloody image. The band accompanied Motörhead as support on their USA tour. In 1987 the EP Terror Rising was released , which in addition to the Jefferson Airplane cover White Rabbit u. a. also included a live recording and the Give 'Em The Ax EP.

The first appearances in Europe followed in 1987 at the Marquee Club in London and at the Reading Festival . A European tour in support of Saxon was canceled at the last moment. Alex Nelson left the band that same year and was replaced by the later David Lee Roth and Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Joe Holmes. With Visual Lies , the band released their most commercial album in 1987. The album reached number 146 on the national album charts. At the beginning of 1988 Lizzy Borden showed signs of disintegration as a band, it became the singer's solo project. Only his brother, drummer Joey Scott Harges, and bassist Mike Davis remained in the line-up.

Where the 1989 album Master Of Disguise numerous (Guest) worked with musicians, including the guitarist Brian Perry, David Michael Phillips (ex were King Cobra ) and Ronnie Jew and Armored Saint bassist Joey Vera , and a forty-strong orchestra on the To hear the record. In Germany the band appeared for the first time at the Christmas Metal Meeting at the end of 1989 together with Manowar , Saxon , Fates Warning and Sabbat . A club tour in 1990 with Tigertailz as support was the second and, for the time being, last tour in Europe. Although Master Of Disguise reached the highest chart position with number 133, the band did not get a new record deal. Until 1992 the band continued to play concerts in the USA with the new bass player Marten Andersson and then broke up. Singer Lizzy founded the punk metal band Diamond Dogs with his brother Joey , but the band never toured or recorded any albums.

Reunion

In 1997 the first rumors arose about a reunion of the band. In 1999 Lizzy Borden played at the Bang Your Head Festival in Balingen alongside bands like WASP , Motörhead , Dio and Deep Purple in front of 18,000 spectators and with the old, bloody show. In addition to Lizzy and Joey, the band included bassist Marten Andersson and guitarist Alex Nelson. Lizzy was detained at the airport on her way home to America and had difficulty explaining when the officers asked why he was carrying a bloody ax in his luggage.

The comeback album Deal With The Devil was released in 2000. The record is about religion, sex, death and the seven deadly sins. In the same year Lizzy Borden performed at the Wacken Open Air . In 2001 the band toured the United States in support of Yngwie Malmsteen .

On May 17, 2004 guitarist Alex Nelson was killed in a head-on collision of his car with another car. The remaining members founded the hard rock band Starwood with guitarist Joey Steals, who had already played with them for the Diamond Dogs , with whom they released the album If It Ain't Broke, Break It! published.

In March 2006 the band announced that they were looking for two new guitarists and wanted to record a new album. In April, ex- Heathen / Vicious Rumors / Metal Church guitarist Ira Black was announced as the first guitarist to join.

On November 2, 2007, the new album "Appointment With Death" was released on Metal Blade Records, which was awarded the highest rating by Metal Hammer magazine . On the CD the band still presents itself as a quartet .

At the end of June 2008 Lizzy Borden played again at the Bang Your Head Festival. Her horror shock show, in which the band's dancer (Steffi Scott) was bitten by singer Lizzy and slipped to the ground covered in blood, was so well received that she was used a second time as a replacement for hardcore superstar , whose flight had been canceled , were allowed to go on stage.

In December 2008 Lizzy Borden, including dancer Steffi and the supporting act Matyr from the Netherlands, toured across Europe and performed in the German cities of Essen, Uelsen, Frankfurt and Lübeck. After the tour, lead guitarist Ira Black left the band, tour guitarist Chris Sanders became a new permanent member.

In 2009 Lizzy Borden released a music video for Under Your Skin , which was shown on March 28, 2009 at the MTV Headbangers Ball .

In April 2009 the band was the main act of the 12th Keep It True Festival in Lauda-Königshofen together with Armored Saint . The new second guitarist next to Sanders was Dario Lorina. For the first time since the reunion, Lizzy Borden appeared again with two lead guitarists. This was followed by further appearances in June 2009 at the Kobetasonik Festival in Bilbao, Spain as the opening act for Mötley Crüe, and at the Rocklahoma Festival in Tulsa , Oklahoma (USA) in July 2009. Dancer Steffi Scott became a permanent member of the group.

In 2014 guitarist Dario Lorina switched to Black Label Society .

In 2018 the seventh studio album My Midnight Things was released , again on Metal Blade Records. On the album, the singer played most of the instruments himself, only his brother Joey Scott on drums is left of the old band line-up.
