Vicious Rumors is an American power metal band formed in 1979 by Geoff Thorpe in Santa Rosa , California . Thorpe is the only constant in the band's history, which has been marked by frequent line-up changes.

history

When it was founded, the band consisted of Thorpe, singer Mark Tate, guitarist Jim Cassero, bassist Jeff Barnacle and Walt Perkins on drums. First appearances were made with Metallica , Mötley Crüe , Lääz Rockit and Exodus at the so-called Metal Mondays in the San Francisco Bay Area . After a few demo recordings , contributions to Metal samplers and a series of line-up changes, the band signed a contract with the record label Shrapnel Records of Mike Varney . With singer Gary St. Pierre, bassist Dave Starr, drummer Larry Howe and Vinnie Moore , who later mainly worked as solo guitarist, the debut album Soldiers of the Night was released in 1986 , which was particularly well received in Europe. Moore and St. Pierre left the band soon after and were replaced by Mark McGee and Carl Albert , which finally formed the line-up for the next seven years.

After the release of the second album Digital Dictator (1988), he switched to Atlantic Records . Here appeared Vicious Rumors (1990) Welcome to the Ball (1991) and recorded in Tokyo Live Album Plug In and Hang On (1992). When Thorpe had to operate on both hands and the continued existence of the band was on the brink, Atlantic ended the contract with Vicious Rumors. After his recovery, Thorpe took the management into his own hands and from then on worked with various smaller labels. In 1994 the sixth album Word of Mouth was released . The preparations for his successor Something Burning (1996) were overshadowed by the death of the singer Carl Albert on April 22, 1995. Geoff Thorpe then took over the guitar work as well as the vocals on the album.

In the following years there were numerous line-up changes. On Cyberchrist (1998) there was only Larry Howe in the band besides Thorpe and he was no longer involved in the recordings for Sadistic Symphony (2001). The 2006 album Warball saw the return of Howe and Dave Starr. It was sung by James Rivera ( Helstar ), who left the band only a year later. With Razorback Killers , the band released their tenth studio album in 2011. In 2013 Vicious Rumors released their new album Electric Punishment .

On the albums Digital Dictator through to Welcome to the Ball in particular, the band plays a “hearty, hymn-like US metal with a lot of melody”. Later they orientated themselves to more modern bands such as Pantera and Machine Head , before the band returned more to the style of their earlier albums from Warball .
