Volbeat is a metal band from the Danish capital Copenhagen . The band is signed to Vertigo Records and has released seven albums and four video albums to date . Her style is a mixture of metal, rock 'n' roll , punk rock , country and blues and is often referred to as "Elvis Metal" based on Elvis Presley .

The band name comes from the album Vol.Beat by the band Dominus , in which Michael Poulsen played before Volbeat was founded. While "Vol" is (by volume , Engl. For volume ) for volume and "Beat" for the rhythm . By April 2016, the band had sold more than 3.5 million albums worldwide.

history

Founding years (2001-2004)

Michael Schøn Poulsen

The band was formed in October 2001 after singer and guitarist Michael Poulsen left the death metal band Dominus. Poulsen was tired of the music and the fans of the death metal scene and wanted to go new musical ways that were not possible with his old band. Poulsen began to write new songs and looked for a permanent band line-up.

The founding members were besides Poulsen Anders Kjølholm ( bass ), Teddy Vang (guitar) and Jon Larsen ( drums ). With this line-up, the band recorded their first ten-song demo , which was released a year later. Vang left the band and was replaced by Franz Gottschalk . With him, the band recorded their second demo, Beat the Meat , which was released in August 2003. The German magazines Metal Hammer and Heavy or what? named Beat the Meat “Demo of the Month”. The songs Soulweeper and Danny & Lucy were played on Swedish and French radio . By the summer of 2005, the demo had sold about a thousand times.

In 2004 Volbeat reached the semi-finals of the largest Danish music competition Live Contest . The band signed a deal with New Aeon Media, a sub-label of Karmageddon Media. The debut album Rebel Monster should be released in 2004. However, its release was delayed and Volbeat eventually signed with Rebel Monster Records, a sub-label of Mascot Records . Rebel Monster Records was named after the Volbeat song Rebel Monster . In the meantime the song Pool of Booze was used for the soundtrack of the Danish snowboard film Frost .

The Strength / The Sound / The Songs (2004-2006)

Thomas Bredahl

In July 2004 the band went to Ribe to record their debut album The Strength / The Sound / The Songs under the direction of producer Jacob Hansen . Five songs from the Beat the Meat demo were used for the album . There were also eight original compositions and a cover version of the Dusty Springfield hit I Only Wanna Be With You . After a concert in Copenhagen in December 2004, the band was approached by representatives of TV 2 . TV 2 wanted to use the music from Volbeat for their broadcast of the handball world championship in Tunisia , but later did not keep their promise.

The Strength / The Sound / The Songs was released in September 2005 and was rated 10 by the German music magazine Rock Hard . In Denmark, the album initially sold slowly. Only after a highly acclaimed appearance at the Roskilde Festival did the situation change and the album was sold over 5,000 times. It reached number 18 on the Danish charts. This made The Strength / The Sound / The Songs the first album by a Danish hard rock / heavy metal band in ten years to reach the top 20 of the Danish album charts. Volbeat played concerts with different bands like Candlemass , Destruction or Life of Agony .

In the Danish Metal Awards was The Strength / The Sound / The Songs named the best debut album of 2005. A year later, the band won the Live Band of the Year category and was named “Hope of the Year” at the Steppeulv Awards. On April 22nd, 2006 Michael Poulsen gave a concert in Copenhagen, at which some studio and live musicians from Elvis Presley performed. In the summer of 2006 Volbeat played at the Rock Hard Festival and the Summer Breeze, among others .

After recording their second studio album, the band gave a twenty-minute concert in November 2006 as part of the football game between FC Copenhagen and Brøndby IF . A month later, Volbeat separated from their guitarist Franz “Hellboss” Gottschalk and had to cancel various concerts because of that. The reason given by the band was a disrespectful behavior by Gottschalk towards the band, the crew and the other bands before and after concerts. He was replaced by Thomas Bredahl from the band Gob Squad . Gottschalk later joined the band Illdisposed .

Rock the Rebel / Metal the Devil (2007-2008)

Not so with Kjølholm

On February 23, 2007, the second album Rock the Rebel / Metal the Devil was released in Germany. In Denmark it was published on February 19. Again Jacob Hansen produced the album. In the German edition of Rock Hard magazine, the album was with MK II of the master plan named "Album of the Month"; like its predecessor, it received the highest score of 10 points in the individual evaluation. The Metal Hammer magazine named the album's sole "Album of the Month" and later as "Album of the Year". The album debuted at number one on the Danish album charts and sold over 10,000 copies in the first month after its release in Denmark.

In June 2007 the band received a gold record in their homeland for 20,000 units of the album Rock The Rebel / Metal The Devil sold . The album stayed in the top five for three months and in the Danish album charts for a total of 61 weeks. On July 13, 2007, Volbeat played together with Mnemic in the opening act for Metallica at their concert in the Danish city of Aarhus .

James Hetfield came up to me and we talked for 20 minutes. He was very cool, calm and humble. He also said, 'I heard you guys play some kind of Elvis Metal. I think I already think that's good! '"

- Michael Poulsen

At the Danish Metal Awards 2007 , Volbeat were recognized in the categories Metal Album of the Year , Metal Cover of the Year and Metal Production of the Year . Rock the Rebel / Metal the Devil went platinum in Denmark in November 2007 . It was the first album by a Danish metal band to go platinum. The released single The Garden's Tale was also awarded platinum.

On February 15, 2008 the first DVD Live: Sold Out! . A week before that, Volbeat opened in Copenhagen for Megadeth . In spring 2008 the band completed another headlining tour through Europe, during which the band was supported by the Swedish band Kayser and ended up as headlining the mini rock festival .

Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood (2008-2009)

Jon Larsen

On March 31, 2008, Volbeat began recording their third studio album, Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood, at Hansen Studios in Ribe . The 14 songs include covers by Hank Williams and Kitty Wells . The main theme of the album is a man who is found murdered in his car in the desert. He forms a band and begins looking for his killer. The song Maybellene i Hofteholder was released as the first single . The single reached number five on the Danish singles chart and became the band's first Top 10 hit. Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood entered the album charts at number one in Denmark and Finland , number four in Sweden and number 15 in Germany. Less than a month after its release, the album went gold in Denmark and went platinum in January 2009.

Volbeat were invited by the Swedish band In Flames to support their European tour. This offer was turned down by Volbeat, as the band would only have been allowed to play for half an hour and should have contributed to the costs of the tour. Instead, Volbeat played their own headlining tour with the US band Stuck Mojo . The second single, Mary Ann's Place , reached number 35 on the Danish single charts. In the Danish Metal Awards was Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood in the categories Album Best and Best Production Award.

In May 2009 Volbeat played the first concerts in North America, where the band appeared in the opening act for the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish . This was followed by appearances at various European festivals such as Rock am Ring / Rock im Park , the Wacken Open Air , or the Graspop Metal Meeting . After their performance at the Provinssirock Festival in Seinäjoki , Finland , the band received a gold record for the album Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood for 10,000 units sold in Finland. For the band it was the first such award outside of their home country.

Beyond Hell / Above Heaven (2009-2012)

Rob Caggiano

In autumn 2009 the band recorded the song A Warrior's Call , an invasion song for Danish boxer Mikkel Kessler . The band released the song as a free download in late November 2009 . At the same time, Volbeat returned to North America to support Metallica with the French band Gojira . During the tour, the band began songwriting for their fourth studio album, Beyond Hell / Above Heaven , which was released on September 10, 2010. Thematically, Beyond Hell / Above Heaven continues the story of the previous album.

The album was released on Vertigo Records and reached number one in the Danish, Finnish and Swedish album charts. In Austria, Germany and Switzerland, positions two, three and seven were placed in the top ten. The album went platinum in Denmark and Germany and gold in Finland and Sweden. The band was nominated internationally for the Echo in the group rock / alternative category, and in 2011 won the Metal Hammer Award for best international band.

In November 2011 the third DVD Live from Beyond Hell / Above Heaven was released . The DVD includes performances in Copenhagen, Los Angeles and at the Rock-am-Ring Festival. Guest musicians include Mille Petrozza ( Kreator ), Scott Ian ( Anthrax ) and LG Petrov ( Entombed ). On November 28, 2011, the band announced the immediate separation from guitarist Thomas Bredahl. At the beginning of 2012 Volbeat took part in the gigantic tour of the band Megadeth through North America. In addition to Volbeat, Motörhead and Lacuna Coil appeared as opening acts. The vacant position of second guitarist was taken over by Hank Shermann from the band Mercyful Fate . The band played their only European concert at Wacken Open Air.

Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies (2013-2015)

Kaspar Boye Larsen

In January 2013, the band began recording their fifth studio album Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies , which was released on April 5, 2013. In addition to Jacob Hansen, the album was produced by former anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano . At the beginning of February 2013 the band announced that Caggiano would also take on the vacant position of second guitarist. About half of the songs on Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies are about gunslingers from the 19th century, with both real and fictional personalities from that era.

Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies entered the respective album charts in six countries . In addition, the album reached number nine in the US album charts . The new album was awarded platinum in Denmark and Austria and a gold record in Germany. At the Danish Music Awards , Volbeat received prizes in the categories Danish Band of the Year and Best Danish Rock Album .

The song Room 24 , which features King Diamond as a guest singer , was nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 2014 Grammy Awards . The award went to Black Sabbath , however . For this, Volbeat won the German Echo Music Prize in the Rock / Alternative International category . At the German Echo Awards 2014 , Volbeat received international awards in the Rock / Alternative group category. In the fall of 2014, Volbeat went on a co-headlining tour in North America with Five Finger Death Punch .

Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie (2016-2018)

Volbeat at Rock im Park 2016

Another co-headlining tour through North America with Anthrax and the opening act Crobot followed in spring 2015 . During the tour, Poulsen confirmed that the band is working on the next studio album, which will be released in 2016. In addition, The Devil's Bleeding Crown, the first new song on the upcoming album, was presented during a concert in Odense . On August 1, 2015, Volbeat played in front of 37,000 spectators in Odense, setting a new audience record for a Danish rock band. In November 2015, the band announced the split from Anders Kjølholm. His exit took place by mutual agreement.

In addition, the band signed a management contract for North America with Q Prime , who also work for Metallica, among others. In April 2016, Volbeat toured the US with Black Stone Cherry and Monster Truck . Kaspar Boye Larsen , who had already played several concerts with Volbeat in 2006 and became a permanent member of the band in May 2016, helped out as bassist . Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie was released on June 3, 2016 and reached number one in the respective album charts in seven countries. In Denmark the album reached quadruple platinum and in Germany and Austria both platinum.

This was followed by festival appearances at Rock am Ring / Rock im Park, Graspop Metal Festival and Nova Rock , followed in autumn 2016 by a European tour with the opening acts Airbourne and Crobot, before Volbeat in summer 2017, together with Avenged Sevenfold and Gojira, on a stadium tour as a support act for Metallica North America played. At Wacken Open Air , the band played their only German festival appearance of 2017. On August 26, 2017, the band played the Copenhagen stadium Parken Stadium . With over 48,250 spectators, Volbeat was the first Danish band to sell out the stadium. Lars Ulrich (Metallica), Mille Petrozza (Kreator) and Mark “Barney” Greenway from the band Napalm Death performed as guests . A recording of the concert will be available on DVD on December 14, 2018 under the title Let's Boogie! Live from Telia Parken released.

Rewind, Replay, Rebound (since 2019)

In April and May 2019, Volbeat played a North American tour with Godsmack , before Volbeat toured North America in the summer of 2019 as part of the Knotfest Roadshow with Gojira and Behemoth in the opening act for Slipknot . The band announced their seventh studio album, Rewind, Replay, Rebound , for August 2, 2019 , which was once again produced by Jacob Hansen and features a guest solo by Gary Holt ( Exodus , Slayer). The album reached number one in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but missed the top of the chart in its home country with number two for the first time since the debut album. At the same time as the album was announced, a European tour with Baroness and Danko Jones was announced for autumn 2019 .

The day before the album was released, nine Danish media outlets published an open letter explaining why they will not write about the band and the album. The signatories include the daily newspapers Information , Berlingske , Jyllands-Posten and Politiken , the tabloid Ekstra Bladet , the music magazine Gaffa and the online magazines Devilution , Poplish and Blastbeat . Ekstra Bladet and Devilution did not receive accreditation for Volbeat's concert at Telia Parken in August 2017 without giving a reason . Even at the Volbeat concerts in Denmark in summer 2018, both media did not receive any accreditation. Both of the excluded media outlets had previously posted negative reviews of the band. After both Ekstra Bladet and Devilution were not sampled in advance with promotional copies of the album on the instructions of the band , the media mentioned above merged. They stated that "the band's lack of respect for a free and independent press will not be tolerated" and that the media involved will not write about the band until the band, record company, management or promoter lifts the ban .

style

Volbeat at Rock am Ring 2016

music

Volbeat use the genre-typical instrumentation of vocals , guitar , bass and drums for their music . Singer Michael Poulsen is almost exclusively responsible for the music. When writing songs, he makes sure that the songs are catchy and easy to sing along with. In an interview, Poulsen stated that if this catchiness is not achieved after 15 minutes, he discards the song idea. The band's sources of inspiration are social distortion , rock'n'roll legends like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash , the rock music of the sixties, but also metal bands like Metallica . In addition, the band takes inspiration from styles such as punk rock, country and blues.

“Our music is a balancing act between rock and metal. We try to get the best of both worlds under one roof. [...] When it comes to rock'n'roll, I love the rousing rhythms. If I'm running Elvis Presley, Fats Domino or Chuck Berry , I can't sit still. Rock and roll songs are simple but work great. What I love about heavy metal is the raw energy that emanates from a distorted guitar. "

- Michael Poulsen

On the second album, the band used non-metal instruments for the first time, such as a banjo or the Hawaiian guitar . The third album, Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood , features a guest singer and string instruments for the first time .

Texts

Singer Michael Poulsen writes all of the band's lyrics. These are largely inspired by the 1950s. Other texts are partly autobiographical or simple love stories.

Continuation stories that span several albums are typical of Volbeat. This originated with the songs Fire Song and Danny & Lucy (11pm) . The protagonists are the 28-year-old drug addict Danny and his 16-year-old girlfriend Lucy. Both flee from Lucy's parents and then die in a car accident. On the second album, the story continues with Mr & Mrs Ness , Lucy's parents. Lucy's mother committed suicide. Her husband is found and arrested with bloodied hands and a weapon in hand. The third album continues with Mary Ann's Place . Mr Ness visits the graves of his wife and daughter while on leave . The story ends with the song You Will Know on the album Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie .

reception

Outside of their homeland, Volbeat are mainly noticed in the rock and metal scene. Your albums are regularly discussed in the relevant print and online magazines. In Denmark the band is mainstream and reaches listeners outside of the rock and metal scene.

“We get an awful lot of emails from fans saying that they 're not really into Metal, but like our melodies and my singing. Or from die-hard rockabilly freaks who normally never hear anything other than 'their' bands, but get on well with us because they like the rock'n'roll elements in our sound. "

- Michael Poulsen

Gold and platinum records

In their home country Denmark, Volbeat have received the most awards so far. In total, the band received six platinum and five gold awards. The albums Beyond Hell / Above Heaven and Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies each received double platinum . Volbeat received two platinum and four gold awards in Germany. The most successful album here is Beyond Hell / Above Heaven , which was awarded triple gold. The band received platinum twice each in Austria and Sweden. The best-selling album in the band's history is Beyond Hell / Above Heaven with over 1.5 million units.
